When Tim Metcalfe first reconnects with cousin Richie, he hopes it will be the start of rebuilding a family bond that has been missing for years. Instead, he soon finds himself facing an impossible situation that changes several lives forever.

Following Richie's arrest after being charged with Rachel's murder, DS Lisa Connor-Swain visits Tim and Sally to explain what has happened. Lisa also confirms that Richie's daughter Lucy has been taken into emergency care, leaving the couple devastated by the teenager's circumstances.

Rather than walking away from the situation, Tim decides he cannot abandon his cousin's daughter. Together with Sally, he agrees to become Lucy's foster carer, knowing she needs a safe and stable home after everything she has endured.

It is a decision that comes from compassion rather than obligation, but Tim quickly discovers that helping Lucy rebuild her life will be far more challenging than simply opening his front door. As Lucy struggles with nightmares, grief and overwhelming emotions, Tim is determined to stand by her no matter how difficult things become.

The storyline places Tim at the heart of an emotional family drama, showing his caring side as he does everything possible to give Lucy the support and security she desperately needs.
