Will Coronation streets Sarah be Convicted? 5 Big Questions

Sarahs murder trial gets under way on Coronation Street this week, and she goes into it with far less support than she had hoped for.

The prosecution will argue that she took the law into her own hands when she killed Theo Silverton, who died earlier this year after a confrontation with Sarah on the roof of a builder's yard. It was DS Lisa Connor-Swain who later told Kit that the Crown Prosecution Service had decided to charge Sarah with murder.

As the trial approaches, the people closest to Sarah are each dealing with something of their own, and several of those problems follow her into the courtroom. These are the five questions that will shape her week.

Will Kit tell the whole truth on the stand?

Sarah's first setback comes before she has even set foot in court. She asks Kit to act as a character witness, and he turns her down. It is only when Bethany demands an explanation that Kit admits he has breast cancer, is about to start chemotherapy and needs to put himself first for now. Bethany wants him to tell her mum before the trial begins, but he refuses.

Kit's first chemotherapy session is on Monday. Before he goes, his son Brody shaves Kit's head for him with an electric razor, and later Brody rings to tell his dad that he needs him more than ever.

Once the trial is under way, Bethany asks Kit to think of Harry as well as Sarah. The following day, Sarah's barrister confirms that Kit will not be coming to court, but Bethany tries again and Kit does eventually take the stand. What he says there has not been revealed. Having kept his diagnosis from Sarah for so long, he gives viewers good reason to wonder whether he will tell the court everything he knows.

Can Todd's evidence help Sarah?

Todd ends up being the person who tells Sarah about Kit's illness. He visits her in prison with Bethany, and when Sarah says she understands why Kit will not support her, Todd blurts out that Kit has breast cancer. Bethany is horrified that the secret is out, and Sarah is left to take in the news just before her trial begins.

Todd then has his own part to play in court. When he takes the stand later in the week, he uses his time in the witness box to defend Sarah. Few people knew Theo as well as Todd did, so his account carries real weight, and it could prove to be one of the most important things the court hears.

How much damage will Lisa's evidence do?

Not every witness is on Sarah's side. On the first day of the trial, evidence from Lisa and Theo's ex-wife Danielle does serious harm to Sarah's defence. David is furious and accuses Lisa of sabotaging his sister's case.

David's anger does not stop there. He also turns on Kit for refusing to help, and the row ends with Kit telling David and Bethany that he wants nothing more to do with their family. With the trial barely under way, the people Sarah needs most are already at odds with one another.

Who will look after Harry?

As the trial goes on, Sarah has to think about what happens if she does not come home. In a call from prison, she asks Bethany to take custody of Harry, Bethany's younger brother, if she is convicted.

It is a request that shows how real the prospect of prison has become for Sarah. It also echoes the plea Bethany made to her mum before the trial began, when she reminded Sarah that she, Kit and Harry all need her at home.

Will Gary take the blame?

That plea came with a request Sarah has not yet answered. Bethany begs her mum to let Gary take the blame for Theo's death, and Sarah is torn.

Gary already has troubles of his own. He has been given a date for his own court hearing and warns Jake and Liam that he could be sent to prison, although Maria insists that will not happen. When the school rings to say Jake has been suspended for fighting, Jake blames Gary for risking his freedom for Sarah and putting her before his own family. He leaves, tells Izzy he no longer wants to live with his dad and moves in with her, and he refuses when Gary begs him to come home.

The verdict in Sarah's trial has not been revealed. Whatever the court decides, Sarah will still have to give Bethany an answer about Gary, and Gary will have to find a way to bring Jake home.
