Coronation Street Shona stunned as Doug asks for another chance

Shona is forced to confront years of complicated family history in upcoming Coronation Street scenes when Doug asks whether they can repair their relationship. His sudden return has already left her stunned, but the real difficulty begins when he makes it clear that he wants another chance with his daughters.

Doug’s absence has shaped both Shona and Jodie in different ways. Although Jodie has previously tried to track him down, actually having him standing in front of them brings up emotions that neither sister can easily push aside.

Shona has built a life in Weatherfield with David and has had to deal with plenty of challenges without Doug there. His reappearance means she now has to decide whether she is prepared to reopen a door that has been closed for years.

Doug explains that he has been taking medication for bipolar disorder and insists that he is trying to get his life under control. He wants Shona to believe that he is not the same man she remembers and that he genuinely wants to make amends for what happened in the past.

For Shona, listening to him does not mean everything is forgiven. She is understandably cautious, because a promise to change cannot erase the hurt created by years of absence and uncertainty.

Jodie is even more guarded and privately warns Doug not to cause trouble. Her reaction makes it clear that she is prepared to protect Shona if she thinks their dad is going to destabilise her life again.

Doug then starts trying to find a place in the family he left behind. Even small moments, such as joking with David, are enough to unsettle Jodie, who clearly does not like seeing him settle into Shona’s world so quickly.

That puts Shona in a difficult position. She has to balance her own feelings about Doug with Jodie’s suspicion, while also working out whether allowing him back into her life could create problems with David and the rest of the family.

Doug appears determined to prove that he has changed, but reconciliation cannot happen simply because he asks for it. Shona has every right to take things slowly and decide for herself how much access he gets to the life she has built.

His return could eventually give Shona the chance to heal some old wounds, but it could just as easily create new ones. For now, Doug is asking for trust, while Shona is left deciding whether he has done anything yet to deserve it.
