Coronation Street Kit hides cancer diagnosis as Bernie senses something is wrong

Kit may have received a devastating cancer diagnosis, but his first instinct is not to gather his family around him. In upcoming Coronation Street scenes, he instead tries to continue as normally as possible while keeping Bernie and Gemma unaware of what doctors have told him.

Kit learns that he has stage three breast cancer which has already spread to his lymph nodes. The diagnosis is particularly frightening following the revelation that Celeste carried a faulty BRCA gene, leaving Kit with much more than his own immediate treatment to think about.

After leaving hospital, Kit is faced with the reality of having to tell the people he loves that he has cancer. Yet rather than immediately confiding in Bernie, he keeps the news to himself and later arrives at the Rovers while Debbie is surrounded by friends and family for her birthday celebration.

Kit does his best to blend into the party, but Bernie knows her son well enough to realise something is not right. When she notices that he is not drinking, Kit brushes away any concern by suggesting that he is simply having some time away from alcohol, but Bernie continues to watch him closely.

The moment shows just how difficult Kit’s secret could become to maintain. He might be able to produce an explanation for one unusual decision, but hiding hospital appointments, scans and the emotional impact of his diagnosis from those closest to him will become increasingly difficult as his treatment progresses.

Todd is eventually brought into Kit’s confidence when Kit tells him that he has a CT scan coming up. Todd immediately encourages him to share the truth with his family, recognising that Kit should not be trying to deal with something so serious without the support of Bernie and Gemma.

There is another painful layer to Kit’s hesitation because his diagnosis may naturally raise questions about the inherited BRCA gene within the wider family. Telling Bernie and Gemma what has happened therefore does not simply mean revealing his own illness, as it could also force everyone to confront frightening questions about their own health.

For now, Kit is trying to protect those around him while giving himself enough time to understand what his diagnosis means. Bernie’s concern suggests that a mother’s instinct may make keeping that secret impossible for much longer, especially once Kit’s medical treatment begins to take a greater toll.
