Coronation Street Fans Furious Over Debbie's Treatment as Paula Faces Backlash

Coronation Street fans have been left heartbroken by Debbie's dementia storyline, with viewers criticising the way several characters have treated her during the latest episodes.

Sunday's instalment prompted particularly strong reactions to Paula, who has been taking advantage of Debbie's vulnerability, while Adam also came under fire for his behaviour at the hotel.

With Debbie already struggling to maintain her independence, viewers are increasingly concerned about how much more she will have to endure.

Fans want Paula away from Debbie

Paula has caused problems since arriving at the Chariot Square Hotel, where her previous connection to Debbie has placed her in a position to exploit their history.

The situation has become particularly uncomfortable because Debbie's vascular dementia affects her memory, leaving her vulnerable to people who do not have her best interests at heart.

One viewer was furious about Paula's behaviour, writing: "Paula manipulating a vulnerable Debbie is probably so realistic but none the less awful to watch, get that bitch back in prison where she belongs 🤬"

Another fan was considerably more dismissive of the character, commenting: "Pointless Paula"

Adam's behaviour causes more anger

Paula was not the only character attracting criticism during Sunday's episode, with Adam's treatment of Debbie also upsetting viewers. Adam became frustrated while searching for his engagement ring, but several fans felt his reaction towards Debbie was unnecessarily harsh.

One viewer commented: "I would not be marrying the man who just taunted and yelled at someone with dementia, personally."

Another agreed that his behaviour was unacceptable, writing: "Hoping she does, his reaction was not okay"

The criticism continued as viewers questioned why Adam appeared to have so little patience with Debbie, particularly given his own family's experience of dementia.

Ronnie referred to Adam's father having the condition, something fans felt should have made him more understanding. One viewer pointed out:

"Especially given, as Ronnie said, his own father had dementia so if anyone should have been sympathetic it should have been him."

The reference to Mike's dementia also brought some of the programme's history into the current storyline, although viewers questioned whether Adam and Ronnie had previously discussed that family connection.

Debbie's scenes leave viewers heartbroken

Beyond the anger towards Paula and Adam, fans have been sharing their sadness at watching Debbie's condition progress.

One viewer wrote: "Debbie absolutely breaking our hearts 😭"

Another admitted they were already dreading where the storyline could eventually lead, commenting: "Debbie breaking our hearts on a daily basis with nearly a year to go, I dread when this all comes to an end 💔"

The reaction demonstrates how invested viewers have become in Debbie's story, particularly because she has always been such an independent and outspoken character.

Viewers want Debbie to have more support

Some fans believe Debbie needs additional help at the hotel, particularly when dealing with customers and people such as Paula.

One contributor suggested she should have somebody she trusts nearby, explaining: "I think she needs to have a full time personal assistant with her, being someone she is close with."

The suggestion reflects wider concerns about Debbie's vulnerability while recognising that she remains determined to continue working and making her own decisions. For many viewers, the most upsetting part of the storyline is not simply Debbie's illness but the way other characters sometimes respond to her.

While Ronnie is struggling with genuine concerns about her wellbeing, Paula's manipulation and Adam's outburst have attracted far less sympathy.

Debbie's determination to remain independent has always been central to her personality, and viewers clearly want to see her treated with the dignity and understanding she deserves.
