Coronation Street Doug makes shock return as Shona and Jodie face their dad

Shona and Jodie are forced to confront their complicated past in upcoming Coronation Street scenes when their estranged father Doug suddenly arrives in Weatherfield. His unexpected appearance comes after Jodie previously tried to track him down, only to discover that he appeared to have vanished.

Jodie’s feelings towards her dad are immediately clear when he turns up without warning. Rather than welcoming him back, she is deeply suspicious of why he has returned and has little interest in allowing him to simply walk back into their lives after everything that has happened.

Doug later manages to catch Jodie alone and tries to explain himself. He tells her that he has been taking medication for bipolar disorder and says he wants the chance to repair his relationship with his daughters, but Jodie is understandably reluctant to accept that things can suddenly be put right.

Shona is also left facing difficult emotions by her father’s return. She eventually agrees to hear him out, suggesting that she may at least be prepared to listen to what Doug has to say, although that does not mean the painful history between them has disappeared.

Jodie remains far less convinced and privately warns Doug not to cause any trouble. She clearly has no intention of allowing him to disrupt Shona’s life again, particularly when she is still trying to establish whether his promises about wanting reconciliation can genuinely be trusted.

Her unease grows when she later spots Doug joking around with David. Seeing her estranged father becoming comfortable around Shona’s family so quickly leaves Jodie disturbed, particularly because Doug has only just returned and has yet to prove that his intentions are as straightforward as he claims.

Doug therefore faces a major challenge if he genuinely wants another chance with his daughters. Returning to Weatherfield is one thing, but earning back trust after years of difficult history is something entirely different, and neither Shona nor Jodie is likely to forget the past simply because he says he has changed.

For Shona, his arrival could open the door to answers and perhaps even some form of reconciliation if Doug can prove himself. For Jodie, however, protecting her sister appears to remain the priority, meaning Doug will have to convince both women that his return is about rebuilding a family rather than causing another round of pain.
