Kacey’s disclosure that she previously had a relationship with a police officer gives her an unexpected connection with Sarah. It may explain why she understands Sarah’s concerns about Kit, but it also leaves questions about her history and the circumstances that brought her into prison.

Bethany may eventually look to Kit for reassurance about Kacey. As a detective, he may be able to learn more about her background, although doing so could create tension if Sarah believes he is interfering with the only friendship keeping her safe.

The attack also highlights how Sarah’s imprisonment affects far more than Sarah alone. Bethany is frightened, Harry is angry and unsettled, and Kit is trying to support them while grieving the relationship he has lost.

Each member of the family is reacting differently, but Bethany may be the one expected to remain practical. She is old enough to understand the risks Sarah faces, yet still powerless to remove her from them.
