Best LGBT Travel Destinations 2026 Revealed in New GayOut Ranking
A new LGBT travel ranking combines legal safety with the size of the local gay scene, putting Spain at number one for LGBT travellers in 2026.
Choosing an LGBT-friendly holiday destination can involve more than checking whether a country has strong equality laws. Travellers may also want to know whether there are LGBT bars, nightlife, Pride events and places where they can actually meet other people.
A newly published Gay Travel Index 2026 attempts to measure both, combining LGBT legal conditions with what travellers can find when they arrive.
The result puts Spain at number one with 92 points, followed by Belgium on 91, Australia on 90, Canada on 89 and Germany on 89.
Why this ranking is different
The index gives 60% of its score to legal safety and 40% to the LGBT scene.
Its legal assessment considers criminalisation, relationship recognition, anti-discrimination laws, legal gender recognition and how laws are actually enforced. Those findings are checked against sources including ILGA World and Human Dignity Trust.
The remaining score looks at LGBT venues and culture. GayOut says its database contains more than 17,000 verified LGBT venue listings across more than 950 cities, with factors including the density and spread of venues, different venue types, Pride events and LGBT film festivals used in its calculations.
Spain takes the top spot
Including the strength of the local scene produces some interesting differences from rankings based mainly on legislation.
Spain scores 92/100, narrowly ahead of Belgium. Australia takes third place, followed by Canada and Germany.
Iceland provides one of the clearest examples of why the methodology matters. Despite having an exceptionally strong legal environment for LGBT people, it scores 85 overall because its smaller population naturally supports a more limited LGBT venue scene.
The underlying venue data also produces some interesting destination findings. Paris has the largest number of dedicated gay-bar listings in the database, São Paulo leads for gay saunas and Maspalomas on Gran Canaria has the largest number of listed men-only resorts.
A useful guide, but not a guarantee
No travel index can determine what an individual visitor will experience. National laws can differ from everyday attitudes, experiences can vary significantly between cities and rural areas, and LGBT venues can open or close quickly.
There is another limitation worth recognising. The organisation publishing the index also operates the venue directory used to calculate its Scene Score. GayOut acknowledges that relationship itself and publishes its methodology and dataset openly, allowing the results to be examined rather than treating the ranking as definitive.
For travellers, the ranking is therefore best used as another planning tool rather than a guarantee of safety or experience.
