Who is Valerie in High Tides? Meet the artist behind the tattoos, motorcycles and music, and discover her relationship with Clara through creator Fernanda.
Valerie is one half of the relationship at the heart of High Tides, but there is far more to her than being Clara’s wife. Through Fernanda’s writing and the growing visual world surrounding the story, Valerie has emerged as an artistic, expressive and sometimes contradictory character whose feelings are often revealed through what she does rather than what she says.
Fernanda knows much more about Valerie than readers have necessarily seen on the page. Speaking exclusively to SoapLandTV, she explained:
“I know Valerie’s contradictions, her limits, the things she would never say out loud.”
That unseen history is important because even the smallest reaction can carry meaning that a new reader or viewer may not immediately understand.
Creativity is woven throughout Valerie’s world. When Fernanda imagined what her Instagram account might look like, she pictured a feed filled with
“tattoos, sketches, motorcycles, music, the studio… and Clara.”
That final part says plenty about Valerie too. Fernanda believes Clara would appear constantly on Valerie’s imaginary feed, whether she was making coffee, reading, spending time at the beach, laughing when she did not realise she was being photographed or simply doing something Clara herself would consider completely unremarkable.
Valerie would not necessarily explain those photographs with elaborate declarations either. Fernanda imagined her using perhaps one word, an inside joke or sometimes no caption at all, reflecting a relationship where affection frequently exists beneath the dialogue rather than being constantly announced.
That quieter communication is central to the way Valerie loves Clara. She notices when Clara becomes unusually silent before Clara has explained what is wrong, while their relationship has repeatedly been tested by experiences neither woman could simply fix for the other.
Fernanda describes that distinction in particularly simple terms: their relationship “has never really been about saving each other. It’s about staying.” Valerie cannot remove Clara’s fears or undo what happened to her body, just as Clara cannot protect Valerie from everything life might bring, but each can remain beside the other.
Valerie’s own accident also revealed just how invested readers had become. Fernanda received messages asking her to stop putting the couple through so much, which made her realise that people were no longer simply interested in what happened next. They had become protective of the women themselves.
Between the art, tattoos, motorcycles, music and unmistakable devotion to Clara, Valerie carries an identity entirely her own. Yet it is often in the smallest looks, gestures and silences that High Tides reveals the most about who she really is.
