Who Is Clara in High Tides? Inside Her Strength, Scars and Love Story With Valerie

Clara may be one half of the relationship at the centre of High Tides, but her journey has grown into a story about identity, vulnerability and what strength really means when life changes without warning. Creator Fernanda originally imagined her as disciplined, fiercely independent and physically capable, before taking the character in a direction that challenged everything she had relied on.

Clara is a former member of the military and a personal trainer who was accustomed to trusting her body and taking care of other people. She rarely needed anyone else to look after her, but that certainty changed when Fernanda introduced a heart condition that took Clara through diagnosis, fear, surgery and recovery.

Fernanda says Clara was the character who surprised her most as the story developed. “Not because she became a different character from the one I originally imagined, but because life forced her to become a different version of herself,” she explained.

What initially appeared to be a story about survival became something more complicated. Clara had built much of her identity around being capable, useful and in control, but afterwards she had to live inside a body she no longer completely trusted and accept that surviving did not necessarily mean returning to exactly who she had been before.

That experience also changed the meaning of strength for Clara. Fernanda explained:

“Sometimes strength became asking for help. Sometimes it was admitting ‘I’m scared.’ Sometimes it was allowing Valerie to take care of her instead of always being the one taking care of everyone else.”

Clara’s scar has become a visible part of that history within the growing visual world of High Tides. Fernanda has said that seeing the scar represented made her think more about the way recovery remains physically present even during ordinary moments, with Clara carrying what happened to her rather than simply leaving it behind.

Valerie is an important part of that journey, although their relationship is not built around one woman rescuing the other. Fernanda describes Clara and Valerie’s love as being about “staying” rather than saving, with affection appearing through quiet gestures, shared coffee, silence and Valerie recognising when something is wrong before Clara has said anything.

Despite everything Clara has experienced, Fernanda remains clear that she is still fundamentally the woman she created at the beginning. What has changed is everything Clara now carries with her, and the understanding that what made her herself was never simply what her body allowed her to do.
