Wentworth: Halfway Home is introducing two residents whose contrasting personalities could make life at Sal’s particularly difficult to read.

Rachel Griffiths plays Moira, a glamorous woman with a history of fraud and blackmail, while Sophie Lowe joins as Sam, whose eagerness to please conceals a vengeful streak. With Boomer trying to build a stable future, both characters raise an intriguing question about how well she can know the women around her.

The appeal is in that uncertainty. A friendly face could offer the companionship Boomer needs, while a more difficult personality might prove useful when trouble arrives. Neither appearance nor criminal history tells viewers who can be trusted, and neither newcomer has been identified as the killer in the series’ murder mystery.

Moira knows the value of a secret

Moira reaches the halfway house after serving three years of a five-year fraud sentence. A former beauty therapist, she married into wealth before her husband’s death exposed the deception behind their luxurious life.

Her background also includes blackmail and lending money on exploitative terms, giving her potential ways to exert influence over others.

For Boomer, the interesting possibility is whether someone like Moira could make a tempting offer when she needs support. Help can come with obligations, and a person who understands somebody else’s vulnerabilities may be well placed to take advantage.

There is also a distinction between having secrets and knowing how to use them. Could Moira discover something that gives her power within the house, or could her own past leave her exposed?

Either possibility would make her worth watching without assuming that manipulation makes her responsible for the death.

Sam could be harder to read

Sam’s history presents a different challenge. An obsession following a broken relationship led to a break-in and assault, and she is now on parole after finding some stability at Sal’s.

Her desire to please sits alongside a capacity for revenge, creating a contrast between the reassurance she might offer and the resentment she could conceal.

That combination invites questions about how Sam might respond to rejection or divided loyalties. Could she become a dependable friend, or might an apparent slight change the way she sees someone?

These remain possibilities rather than revealed storylines, and her past alone does not establish how she will behave towards Boomer.

For Boomer, deciding whom to trust could become as important as recognising whom to fear. Moira and Sam offer different reasons to look beneath the surface, but both deserve to be discovered through their actions rather than judged in advance.

Watching those relationships develop should give the mystery room to surprise, especially if the person Boomer needs most is the last one she expects.
