Warriors Broadway Musical Reveals Star-Studded Cast

The Broadway adaptation of cult film The Warriors has revealed its principal cast, with several former Hamilton performers joining the female-led production created by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis.

The new musical begins previews at New York's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on 9 March 2027, ahead of its official opening on 8 April. The casting announcement, made on 20 October, introduces the performers who will bring the reimagined New York street gang to the stage.

Miranda and Davis have adapted the story from the 1979 film and Sol Yurick's original novel, introducing a different perspective by making the central gang predominantly female.

Who has joined the Warriors Broadway cast?

The newly announced cast includes Jasmine Cephas Jones, Amber Gray, Sasha Hutchings, Julia Harriman, Aneesa Folds and Gizel Jiménez.

Jaci Calderon, Kenita R. Miller, Sasha Allen, Casey Likes and Donald Webber Jr. have also been confirmed, with further casting details expected ahead of the production.

Several performers have existing connections to Miranda's previous work, particularly the musical Hamilton, which became an international theatrical success following its Broadway debut in 2015.

Jasmine Cephas Jones originated the roles of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in Hamilton, while Sasha Hutchings, Julia Harriman and Donald Webber Jr. have also appeared in the production.

The cast combines established Broadway performers with artists who have worked across theatre, television and music, providing a strong ensemble for a story built around movement, rivalry and survival.

What is Warriors about?

Warriors follows a fictional New York street gang attempting to make its way home to Coney Island after attending a major gathering in the Bronx.

When respected gang leader Cyrus is murdered, the Warriors are falsely accused of responsibility, leaving them pursued by rival gangs and law enforcement.

Their journey across New York becomes increasingly dangerous as they encounter different groups controlling parts of the city.

The original 1979 film, directed by Walter Hill, developed a cult following through its distinctive portrayal of New York nightlife, stylised gangs and memorable characters.

The Broadway adaptation retains the central story while changing the composition of the Warriors themselves, placing female performers at the heart of the dangerous journey.

That decision offers an opportunity to explore the story's themes of loyalty, friendship and survival through a different group of characters.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis bring the story to Broadway

Miranda and Davis are responsible for the production's book, music and lyrics, building on their previous collaboration for the 2024 Warriors concept album.

The album featured a range of performers and musical influences, combining styles associated with New York's diverse cultural history.

The stage adaptation continues that approach, incorporating sounds associated with hip-hop, salsa, ska, metal and other musical traditions.

Jenny Koons directs the production, with Andy Blankenbuehler serving as co-director and choreographer. Blankenbuehler previously worked with Miranda on Hamilton and In the Heights, receiving major theatre awards for his choreography.

The creative team also includes scenic designer David Korins, costume designer Dede Ayite, lighting designer Natasha Katz and projection designer Hana S. Kim.

Together, the team will translate the film's journey across New York into a live theatrical production, using movement, music and stage design to create the changing locations encountered by the characters.

When does Warriors open on Broadway?

Previews begin at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Tuesday 9 March 2027, with the official opening scheduled for Thursday 8 April.

The production is expected to run for approximately 90 minutes without an interval, offering a concentrated stage adaptation of the original story.

Ticket presales begin on 20 October, followed by general public sales on Thursday 22 October. A UK production has not been announced, meaning British theatre audiences would currently need to travel to New York to see the show.

The production marks Miranda's return to an original Broadway musical following the success of Hamilton, while introducing a new interpretation of one of cinema's most recognisable cult stories.
