Varsity Nights Creator Arby Teases Becker’s Season 2 Story
Varsity Nights creator Arby looks back at Luca, Eli and Cole's Season 1 story and reveals Eli will take the lead when Season 2 begins on October 1.
Luca Bennett arrives at Sierra Coast University knowing exactly who he wants, but there is one major complication. The person he wants is his roommate Eli Becker, who spends much of Season 1 refusing to admit what is happening between them.
That relationship sits at the heart of Varsity Nights, the 18+ gay sports drama set around the fictional university's Division 1 men's swim team. Team captain Cole Vanowen becomes increasingly important as Luca is drawn towards him while Eli continues to hold back.
“Luca Bennett is the freshman who knows what he wants. Eli Becker is his roommate, who does not, or says he does not. Cole Vanowen is the team captain, and Cole is where Luca ends up when Eli will not give him a straight answer. Cole has his own secret, and a lot riding on keeping it. Three people, two beds and a single room down the hall, and almost none of it said out loud.”
What gives the relationship its pull is that the story rarely allows any of the three to resolve things cleanly. Attraction is evident long before everyone involved is prepared to name it, leaving small choices, silences and missed opportunities to carry much of the drama.
The moment Season 1 was building towards
That approach becomes particularly important in the Fall Break special, when two of the central characters are left alone in a dorm for four days.
After ten episodes of one of them refusing to acknowledge what he wants, Arby describes a quiet moment in the SCU weight room as the scene the season had been moving towards.
“There is a scene in the SCU weight room, just the two of them and the morning light, where one is supposed to be spotting the other and cannot stop looking at his face instead of the bar. That is the moment the whole season was built toward, and it happens without a single big line.”
The wider Varsity Nights story is planned well ahead, although individual scenes can still develop while episodes are being made. Arby works from long term character arcs but allows the visuals and the characters themselves to influence how each stage of the story is reached.
“Both. The big arcs are planned seasons out, and I keep a series bible that is bigger than the series itself at this point. But the episodes get built one scene at a time, and the characters push back. Sometimes a frame comes out and I realize a character would not do what I had written, and the outline changes. The destination is fixed. The route is not.”
Season 2 becomes Eli's story

Winter Break will close Season 1 before Varsity Nights returns on October 1. Arby has confirmed the biggest shift awaiting viewers while keeping the wider details of Eli's next chapter under wraps.
“Winter Break is the next special, closing out Season 1. Then Season 2 goes live October 1, and it is Eli's story this time. Season 1 was Luca's. Season 2 is what happens when the person who has spent ten episodes not saying things finally has to be the one talking.”
Arby has not revealed the full direction of Eli's season, but the change in perspective puts the character who has spent much of the first season holding back directly at the centre of the story.
Season 2 is also only the middle of the planned Swim Team story, which is currently intended to run across three seasons.
The wider Varsity Nights universe is expanding beyond the pool too, with Soccer Team next and several Soccer Moments already available as an early introduction to its characters. With Swim Team planned across three seasons and a second sport already being developed, Arby is clearly building something designed to grow well beyond a single storyline.
For anyone discovering Varsity Nights ahead of Season 2, The Summer Between is available free and is Arby's recommended starting point. Everything after that first free special is available through subscription and is intended to be followed in order.

With Eli stepping into the lead, Season 2 gives Varsity Nights the chance to explore the same relationships from a very different perspective while continuing the slow burn storytelling that has defined the first season.
For viewers already invested in Luca, Eli and Cole, October 1 marks the start of a fresh chapter in a series that still has plenty of room to grow.
Varsity Nights Season 2 begins on October 1, with Eli taking centre stage following Luca's Season 1 story.
