Universal Music Is Launching an AI Platform That Lets Fans Remix Real Artists’ Songs

Universal Music Group is teaming up with ElevenLabs on a new licensed AI music platform that will allow fans to create remixes, mashups and other new versions of songs from participating artists.

The multi-year deal marks ElevenLabs’ first agreement with a major record company and will see the two companies develop AI music tools using authorised recordings and rights-cleared material.

Artists and songwriters will be able to choose whether to take part, with Universal saying the aim is to give creators control over how their music is used while also allowing them to benefit financially from new AI-generated experiences.

The platform is expected to let fans experiment with existing music in ways that have previously raised major copyright concerns when done through unlicensed AI services. Instead of scraping songs or recreating voices without permission, the new system is being built around music that has been officially licensed.

Universal and ElevenLabs also plan to work together on new AI audio tools for artists and songwriters, suggesting the partnership will go beyond fan remixes and into music creation itself.

The move is significant because major record labels have spent much of the past few years fighting against unauthorised AI-generated music. This agreement shows another direction beginning to emerge, where labels are starting to build their own licensed AI products rather than simply trying to block the technology.

For fans, the appeal could be straightforward. If major artists opt in, listeners could eventually be able to create personalised versions, remixes or mashups using music they already know, but within a system approved by the rights holders.
