UK LGBTQ+ News Round Up 30 August 2026: Manchester Pride, Wes Streeting And Conversion Practices

The final week of August has brought celebration, political developments and some more difficult stories for LGBTQ+ communities across the UK. Thousands have returned to the streets for Manchester Village Pride, while the Government has published new analysis of its proposed conversion practices legislation.

Elsewhere, Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has spoken about the homophobic abuse directed at him since taking office, police are appealing for information following a homophobic assault in London and new support is being made available for LGBT+ people in Wales.

Wes Streeting Speaks About Homophobic Abuse

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has spoken about the volume of homophobic abuse he has received since taking the role, saying he has experienced more online homophobia since his appointment than during the rest of his life.

Wes became the first openly gay person to serve as UK Defence Secretary when he was appointed in July. He said some of the hostility appeared to come from people uncomfortable with a gay man leading the Armed Forces, while also speaking positively about the reaction he has received from people within the Ministry of Defence.

His appointment carries particular significance given that gay and lesbian people were prohibited from serving openly in the British Armed Forces until 2000. Wes said the relatively limited attention given to his sexuality outside the online abuse also demonstrated how much attitudes have changed.

Coronation Street Stars Join Manchester Village Pride

Manchester city centre filled with rainbow flags on 29 August as 12,000 people took part in the Manchester Village Pride parade despite torrential rain. Thousands more watched along the route from Deansgate to the Gay Village, with more than 30,000 people expected across the full Bank Holiday weekend.

ITV Pride was among the groups taking part, with stars from Coronation Street and Emmerdale joining colleagues from across ITV in the parade. Coronation Street has a long connection with Manchester Pride, with Weatherfield faces regularly supporting the city's LGBTQ+ celebrations over the years.

The parade was held under the theme No Place Like Home, celebrating the Gay Village as the historic home of Pride in Manchester. This year's event is being run by Manchester Village Pride CIC following the collapse of the previous operating company, with celebrations continuing across the Village before the George House Trust Candlelight Vigil in Sackville Gardens on Monday.

Government Adds New Conversion Practices Equality Assessment

The Government added a new equality impact assessment to its existing draft Conversion Practices Bill on 27 August, providing further analysis of how the proposed legislation could affect people with protected characteristics in England and Wales.

The draft Bill itself was originally published in June and would create a criminal offence covering abusive conduct intended to change another person's sexual orientation or transgender identity where the required legal threshold is met. It would also introduce protection orders and provisions covering the encouragement or assistance of conversion practices involving UK nationals or residents overseas.

The new assessment considers the potential impact across protected characteristics including sexual orientation, gender reassignment, sex, religion or belief and disability. The Bill remains in draft form and will undergo further parliamentary scrutiny before any final legislation is introduced.

Woman Ordered To Pay Compensation Over Transphobic Messages

Lyndsey Peebles, 67, was ordered to pay £500 compensation after pleading guilty to sending messages aggravated by prejudice relating to transgender identity. The case was heard at Greenock Sheriff Court in Scotland and received wider coverage during the week.

Sheriff James Varney described the messages as horrific and told Peebles that she had pleaded guilty to a hate crime. She was also given an 18 month non harassment order preventing her from contacting the woman who received the messages.

Police Appeal Over Homophobic Hackney Attack

The Metropolitan Police issued a fresh appeal on 26 August as officers continue investigating a homophobic assault in Broadway Market, Hackney. Police released an image of a man they want to identify and speak to as part of their enquiries.

A 23 year old man was subjected to homophobic abuse and assaulted during the early hours of 4 July, suffering an injury to his face. Police said he continues to receive support from specialist LGBT+ liaison officers and have asked anyone who recognises the man pictured in their appeal to come forward.

Galop Expands Support For LGBT+ People In Wales

Galop announced on 26 August that two more online support groups for LGBT+ adults in Wales will begin in September with funding from the Welsh Government. Both programmes are designed for people aged 18 and over who have experienced abuse or violence.

One group will focus on recovery following domestic abuse, while Repairing the Rainbow will support people who have experienced abuse outside domestic settings, including hate crime and sexual violence. The programmes will run for twelve weeks and combine guided learning, reflection and peer support with trained LGBT+ facilitators.

Paul Drayton Speaks About Alleged Grindr Blackmail

Paul Drayton, the former husband of comedian Alan Carr, has spoken about being targeted in an alleged blackmail attempt involving intimate photographs he had shared through Grindr. He said the person contacting him threatened to distribute the images unless he handed over money.

Paul refused to pay and reported what had happened to West Sussex Police. He has now spoken publicly about the experience to raise awareness of online extortion, while police have confirmed that the allegation is being investigated.

Sandie Peggie Appeal Grounds Published

The legal team representing NHS Fife nurse Sandie Peggie published the detailed grounds of her employment tribunal appeal on 28 August in the continuing case involving transgender doctor Beth Upton.

The original tribunal upheld some harassment claims against NHS Fife but dismissed Sandie's discrimination, indirect discrimination and victimisation claims, while the claims brought against Beth were dismissed. Sandie's lawyers argue that the tribunal applied the wrong legal analysis when considering NHS Fife's changing room policy.

The Employment Appeal Tribunal had already ruled in July that 13 of the 14 grounds could proceed towards a full appeal hearing. Her legal team is separately challenging the rejection of the remaining ground concerning an allegation of tribunal bias, with the wider appeal expected to be heard in 2027.
