Tropfest to Return to Sydney's Domain in 2027 After A$2.7 Million Funding Deal

Tropfest will return to Sydney's Domain in February 2027 after the New South Wales Government committed A$2.7 million in funding over three years to support the short-film festival.

Announced on Friday, 9 October, the funding agreement will help keep Tropfest free for audiences while providing a platform for emerging Australian filmmakers. The next edition is scheduled for Saturday, 13 February 2027, marking the first time in the festival's 34-year history that its main event will take place on a Saturday night.

The announcement follows Tropfest's return in February 2026 after a seven-year hiatus. That edition took place at Centennial Park, attracted more than 30,000 spectators and received over 700 film submissions, demonstrating continuing interest in an event that has helped introduce new creative talent to the Australian screen industry.

Founded in a Darlinghurst café in 1993, Tropfest developed into one of the world's best-known short-film festivals. Its format gives filmmakers the opportunity to screen their work before a large public audience, while the festival's wider programme creates opportunities for writers, directors, actors and production teams to establish industry connections.

Returning to the Domain also brings the event back to a location closely associated with its history. For audiences, the outdoor festival offers a free way to discover short films on a large scale, while for emerging filmmakers it provides a route to visibility beyond online platforms and smaller screening events.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said the funding would help secure Tropfest's future as a major free cultural event and support local creative talent. Festival founder and director John Polson also welcomed the agreement, describing the return to the Domain as a significant moment for the event and its audience.

The 2027 programme is expected to include 16 films making their world premieres at the festival. Submissions are scheduled to open on 1 December 2026, giving filmmakers time to prepare entries ahead of the next edition.

The new funding agreement provides support across three years, rather than securing only a single festival. For Tropfest, that creates a more stable basis for planning future events while continuing its focus on accessible screenings and opportunities for filmmakers at the beginning of their careers.
