Trigger Point Series 4: Vicky McClure and Cast Reveal ‘Biggest Threat Yet’ as Lana Faces Her Most Dangerous Mission

Trigger Point is returning for its fourth series with Vicky McClure back at the centre of an even bigger threat, as Lana and the bomb disposal team face a sophisticated campaign that puts thousands of lives at risk.

The six-part series brings back Eric Shango as Danny, Nabil Elouahabi as Hass, Natalie Simpson as Helen and Maanuv Thiara as Batra, alongside Julie Graham joining as Counter Terror chief Nia. The new story begins with devastating bombings across London and quickly develops into what the team behind the drama describe as their most ambitious challenge yet.

Lana faces the team’s biggest threat

Lana begins the series working alongside Counter Terror Command as the hunt for those responsible intensifies, but the danger is only one part of what she is facing. After the events of the previous series, she is attending therapy and trying to rebuild herself while continuing to operate in one of the most demanding jobs imaginable.

Vicky said viewers will see a different side to Lana as that personal struggle continues alongside the escalating threat.

“What’s exciting with series four is yes, Lana has the skills for the job, but the threat this time is way bigger than ever before,” she explained. “There are lots of conflict within the counter terrorism team, so it’s a very knotty show this year.”

Creator Jed Mercurio also teased that Lana will be forced to question how much of herself she is prepared to sacrifice for the job. He described the new bomb threat as “the most dangerous bomb threat that the team has faced” and said the series will explore more of the characters beyond their professional lives.

Huge stunts from the opening episode

Trigger Point wastes little time in raising the stakes. The opening episode sees the team racing against the clock to stop a suspicious lorry travelling through London before it reaches its intended destination.

Vicky described the sequence as just the beginning of what viewers can expect.

“It’s the biggest threat we’ve ever encountered on the show,” she said. “In episode one there’s a race against time with a lorry going through the capital with a bomb in the back.”

The action then expands onto the water and into further large-scale set pieces across the series. Writer Chris Brandon said the ambition was to make Series 4 feel almost like “a six-hour action movie”, while still retaining the character-driven drama that has become central to the show.

Danny, Hass and Batra step up

The wider team will have significantly more to deal with too. Danny remains deeply loyal to Lana and the unit despite previously considering whether his future might lie elsewhere, while Hass finds himself taking on an unfamiliar role during the opening lorry sequence.

Eric said Danny’s commitment to his colleagues remains at the heart of his character.

“The threat is the biggest it has ever been and it implicates everybody,” he explained. “Lana can be chaotic, but Danny is the constant.”

Nabil similarly teased just how relentless the new run becomes, describing it as feeling like “three series in one”. He added that the opening chase gives only a small indication of the scale to come, with the danger continuing to increase as the investigation develops.

Batra has meanwhile grown into his senior role and begins the series with far greater confidence. Maanuv said the new episodes repeatedly wrong-foot both the characters and the audience, warning viewers that trust will become increasingly important as secrets begin to surface.

Helen heads into darker territory

One of the biggest character stories belongs to Helen, whose personal and professional life becomes increasingly complicated. Natalie revealed that Helen is feeling overlooked and uncertain at the beginning of the series, while pressures elsewhere in her life leave her questioning who she can rely on.

“She doesn’t know who to trust for reasons that will become clear,” Natalie said. “She’s feeling paranoid and a little bit insecure in her position, and so she makes some bad decisions along the way.”

Chris has also teased a significant storyline for Helen, explaining that the complexities already present in the character have been pushed further for Series 4. Her relationship with Batra remains especially important, with his growing concern becoming harder to ignore.

Julie Graham joins as Nia

Julie Graham joins the cast as Nia, the head of the counter terrorism unit and a figure who brings a new dynamic to Lana’s world. Rather than immediately placing the two women against one another, the series develops a relationship built on professional respect.

Vicky said she particularly enjoyed that aspect of the story.

“Nia and Lana have a very similar mindset, so there’s not a battle between them,” she explained. “They’re able to work in harmony.”

Jed described the relationship between Lana and Nia as one of the areas he was especially excited to explore, while Chris said Nia is an effective operator who remains calm and professional despite the scale of the challenge facing the capital.

Six episodes build towards a huge finale

Across the six episodes, the investigation moves from the lorry attack to a boatyard, a disused workshop and a private airfield as the team attempts to understand who is behind the campaign. Internal complications and the disappearance of a colleague then push Lana and the others into an increasingly dangerous position.

By the final episode, the stakes have escalated dramatically as the team enters a minefield and races to prevent a plan capable of causing devastating casualties. With both the investigation and relationships inside the team under mounting pressure, Series 4 looks set to test Lana and her colleagues on every level.

Vicky believes that ambition is exactly what returning viewers deserve, saying: “We’ve thrown everything at this series, to make it as entertaining and as real as possible.” With bigger stunts, shifting loyalties and a threat unlike anything the team has previously confronted, Trigger Point is preparing to return on its largest scale yet.
