Netflix has added a dark new crime thriller to its weekend line-up, and The Whisper Man comes with an unusually heavyweight cast led by Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan and Michael Keaton.
Released on Netflix on 28 August, the film adapts Alex North’s bestselling 2019 novel and combines a child disappearance, an old serial killer investigation and a fractured relationship between a father and son. For viewers looking for something darker to stream, it is one of Netflix’s biggest new film releases of the weekend.
Adam Scott plays Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer trying to rebuild his life with his young son Jake following the death of his wife. Their attempt at a fresh start takes a terrifying turn when Jake disappears, forcing Tom towards the one person he has spent years avoiding.
That person is his estranged father Peter Willis, played by Robert De Niro. Peter is a retired detective who previously captured a notorious child killer known as the Whisper Man, but the new disappearance appears disturbingly connected to the crimes he thought had ended years earlier.
Michael Keaton takes on the role of imprisoned killer Frank Carter, while Michelle Monaghan plays detective Amanda Beck as the investigation begins uncovering similarities between the current case and Carter’s past crimes.
The story revolves around an unsettling rhyme linked to the killer and the possibility that someone may have continued what Carter started. With Jake missing, Tom and Peter are forced to confront not only the investigation but the damaged relationship between them.
Directed by James Ashcroft, The Whisper Man runs for just under two hours and leans heavily into the psychological serial killer thrillers that dominated cinemas during the 1990s. Alongside De Niro, Scott, Monaghan and Keaton, the cast also includes John Carroll Lynch, Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague and Acston Luca Porto.
The film also keeps the emotional relationship between its characters at the centre of the mystery. Tom is dealing with grief and trying to protect his son, while Peter is forced back towards a case that has followed him long after his retirement.
