The Shards: Inside Disney+’s New LGBTQ+ Thriller

FX’s The Shards has become one of the most talked about new LGBTQ+ dramas of 2026, mixing sexuality, obsession and coming of age with a dark serial killer mystery set against the wealthy world of 1980s Los Angeles.

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’s 2023 novel and executive produced by Ryan Murphy, the nine episode series premiered in the UK on Disney+ on 6 August 2026. What Is The Shards About?

Bret is dating Debbie, played by Hayes Warner, while also hiding his attraction to men and having secret sexual encounters. His friendship with Susan, played by Kaia Gerber, is equally complicated, while Susan is dating Thom, played by Graham Campbell.

Everything becomes more unsettling when Robert Mallory, played by Homer Gere, arrives at school. Bret becomes fascinated by Robert but increasingly suspicious of him, particularly as the newcomer appears at the same time a serial killer known as The Trawler is targeting young people across Los Angeles.

The adult cast includes Evan Rachel Wood as Debbie’s mother Liz and Wes Bentley as her powerful Hollywood producer father Terry.

LGBTQ+ Representation In The Shards

Bret’s sexuality is fundamental to the series rather than a secondary storyline.

He is living in 1981 and has not openly acknowledged that he is gay, instead maintaining his relationship with Debbie while secretly meeting men. His attraction to Robert adds another layer of tension to a relationship already shaped by suspicion, fascination and obsession.

That makes The Shards as much a story about hidden identity as it is a thriller.

The period setting is particularly important. The story takes place just as the AIDS crisis was beginning to emerge, giving Bret’s secrecy and fear a very different context from a contemporary coming out story.

Igby Rigney leads the cast as Bret, with Homer Gere as Robert Mallory, Kaia Gerber as Susan Reynolds, Hayes Warner as Debbie Schaffer and Graham Campbell as Thom Wright.

Evan Rachel Wood plays Liz Schaffer, Wes Bentley plays Terry Schaffer and Jordan Roth appears as Steven Reinhardt.

The series is based on Ellis’s semi autobiographical novel, although the murder mystery and many of its characters belong to the fictionalised world he created.

Where Was The Shards Filmed?

Unlike many television dramas pretending to be Los Angeles, The Shards was actually filmed extensively across Los Angeles.

Westwood Village was transformed to recreate its 1981 appearance, while Occidental College in Eagle Rock was used as Bret’s elite prep school. Production also recreated the original Sherman Oaks Galleria using South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach.

Other filming took place around Los Angeles and along the Pacific Coast Highway, helping the series retain the strong Southern California identity that is central to the story.

Episodes And UK Release

The Shards has nine episodes in its first season.

The first two episodes arrived on Disney+ UK on 6 August 2026, with further episodes released weekly. The finale is scheduled to arrive in the UK on 10 September.

Reviews And IMDb Rating

Reaction to The Shards has been noticeably divided, although some critics have been extremely enthusiastic.

The Guardian awarded the series five stars and praised its production, cinematography and soundtrack, while other reviewers have been more critical of how Ryan Murphy adapted the novel.

IMDb currently lists The Shards at 5.9 out of 10, based on more than 2,000 viewer ratings.

As the series is still airing, those audience scores are likely to continue changing.

What makes The Shards particularly interesting from an LGBTQ+ perspective is its refusal to separate sexuality from the wider world surrounding Bret.
