The Gorgeous Nothings brings gay prisoners’ stories to the New York stage
The Gorgeous Nothings brings the stories of gay prisoners in 1930s New York to PAC NYC. Find out what the musical is about and where to see it.
The Gorgeous Nothings, a stage musical inspired by gay men imprisoned in 1930s New York, will have its world premiere in February 2027. The production follows six inmates whose stories unfold through their prison ward’s annual Christmas show.
Set in the men’s penitentiary on Welfare Island, the musical explores a segregated ward where men were imprisoned for homosexuality. Their Christmas pageant provides the setting for exuberant performances within a place that restricted their freedom.
Its score draws on the Great American Songbook, the collection of classic American popular songs associated with Broadway and Hollywood. Those songs are woven into the inmates’ stories and the pageant’s theatrical numbers.
Travis Lee Russ has created and written the musical, with Danny Mefford directing and choreographing. The production brings a little-known chapter of LGBTQ+ history to the stage through characters inspired by real lives.
The show has developed through readings, concerts and workshops over several years. These have included readings at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and workshops at Baryshnikov Arts.
Where to see it:
The Gorgeous Nothings runs at New York’s Perelman Performing Arts Center, known as PAC NYC, from 16 February to 20 March 2027. Performance and ticket information is available through the official production page.
