The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is returning with David Oyelowo and Viola Prettejohn leading Sky’s new adaptation.
While filming begins in Lithuania this October, Stockholm offers fans a chance to explore the streets behind Stieg Larsson’s stories and locations used in the earlier Swedish film.
Explore Stockholm’s Millennium neighbourhood
Södermalm sits immediately south of Gamla Stan, the Swedish capital’s old town. Once a crowded working-class district, this hilly island now combines historic buildings with cafés, vintage shops and lively bars.
It is also central to the Millennium stories. Exploring its streets brings together the characters’ fictional addresses and the real neighbourhood that gives Larsson’s writing much of its atmosphere.
Find the addresses behind the story
Bellmansgatan 1 is the home address Larsson gave journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the books. Nearby Monteliusvägen offers a scenic detour, with views across the water towards central Stockholm.
Fiskargatan 9 is where Lisbeth buys her sprawling apartment in the novels. Both addresses are residential buildings, so admire them from the public street without entering doorways or disturbing residents.
For a connection to the screen adaptation, Götgatan 11 appears as the Millennium magazine office in the 2009 Swedish film starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist. You can view the building from the street, but there is no public newsroom attraction to enter.
Stop at a historic Millennium haunt
Kvarnen, at Tjärhovsgatan 4, offers somewhere fans can step inside. The restaurant and beer hall features in the books and has welcomed diners since 1908, making it a fitting stop for traditional Swedish food.
Start your walk around Slussen and allow time for Södermalm’s hills, photographs and a meal. These are established Millennium connections, separate from the forthcoming Sky production’s Lithuanian filming.
Getting to Stockholm from the UK
Direct flights to Stockholm Arlanda Airport operate from UK airports including London Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh. The flight from London takes around two hours and 30 minutes.
From the airport, take the Arlanda Express, a dedicated airport train that reaches Stockholm Central railway station in around 18 minutes.
From there, follow signs to the adjoining T-Centralen underground station and take the metro to Slussen, a convenient starting point for exploring Södermalm’s Millennium locations on foot.
