The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo finds its new Lisbeth Salander as Sky reveals lead cast
Sky casts Prettejohn and Oyelowo as Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist in its new eight-part The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has found its new Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, with Sky confirming Viola Prettejohn and David Oyelowo will lead its upcoming television adaptation.
Viola will take on the iconic role of hacker Lisbeth, while David plays journalist Mikael in the new eight-part Sky Original mystery thriller. The casting puts the pair at the centre of a franchise whose Millennium novels have sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.
The new series returns to the mystery at the heart of Stieg Larsson’s first novel. Mikael and Lisbeth investigate the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, who vanished more than three decades earlier from the secluded island home of one of Sweden’s most powerful industrial dynasties.
As their investigation digs further into the Vanger family’s past, the pair discover a threat much closer to the present.
Rather than making a period adaptation, Sky is moving the story into the modern day. The series will retain the characters and central mystery while exploring how themes including power, secrecy, corruption and misogyny have evolved in an increasingly connected digital world.
Viola’s previous credits include The Crown and The Testament of Ann Lee, while David has appeared in Silo and Selma. David will also serve as an executive producer on the new series.
Amanda Coe, Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna are writing and executive producing, with King Richard and Bob Marley: One Love filmmaker Reinaldo Marcus Green serving as lead director. Andrea Harkin and Amy Neil will also direct episodes.
Production is due to begin in Lithuania in October 2026, with Left Bank Pictures, the company behind The Crown and Dept. Q, producing.
Sky has confirmed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will be available in the UK and Ireland, as well as several European territories. An exact release date has not yet been announced.
