The Debut Closes London Film Festival Ahead of UK Release
The Debut closes the 2026 BFI London Film Festival, with Julianne Moore starring in Jesse Eisenberg's comedy ahead of its January UK cinema release.
Julianne Moore has helped bring the 70th BFI London Film Festival to a close with The Debut, a new comedy written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg about a woman who discovers an unexpected passion for community theatre.
The film received its UK premiere at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 18 October, concluding this year's festival before its wider British cinema release on 15 January 2027.
Moore plays Mona, a reserved New Jersey housewife whose familiar routine changes when she becomes involved in a local theatrical production. The film also stars Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey and Eisenberg, bringing together an ensemble cast for a story about confidence, personal identity and discovering new possibilities later in life.
What is The Debut about?
Mona has spent years living within the expectations of her family and community, rarely placing her own ambitions at the centre of her life.
When she unexpectedly joins a local production of an original musical, she discovers an unfamiliar world of rehearsals, theatrical personalities and creative relationships.
The stage production, titled Nosy Neighbours, becomes an increasingly important part of Mona's life as she immerses herself in her new role. For Mona, the experience begins as an opportunity to try something different, but gradually becomes a journey of self-discovery.
The film explores what happens when someone who has spent years avoiding attention suddenly finds herself drawn towards the stage and the emotional freedom that performing can provide.
Jesse Eisenberg brings his theatre experience to the screen
Eisenberg wrote and directed The Debut, drawing inspiration from his own experiences of community theatre during childhood.
He has spoken about how those early experiences helped shape his understanding of performance and the relationships people develop while creating something together.
The fictional musical at the centre of the film features seven original songs written by Eisenberg, recreating the atmosphere of a community production with its own performers, rehearsals and backstage personalities.
Although the film contains musical performances, its principal focus remains Mona's personal journey and the relationships that develop around the stage production.
Eisenberg developed the project with Moore in mind for the central role, giving the actress an opportunity to portray a character whose growing confidence brings unexpected consequences.
Who stars in The Debut?
Julianne Moore leads the cast as Mona, with Paul Giamatti playing Jerry, the theatre director whose influence shapes her experience.
The ensemble also includes Halle Bailey, Jesse Eisenberg, Havana Rose Liu, Bernadette Peters, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, Maulik Pancholy and Bonnie Milligan. Patrick Fabian appears as Mona's husband, whose relationship with her forms part of the wider story about family responsibilities and personal change.
The film follows Eisenberg's previous directorial work, including A Real Pain, which received major recognition during the 2025 awards season.
When will The Debut be released in UK cinemas?
The Debut received its UK premiere as the closing-night film of the 2026 BFI London Film Festival on 18 October, following an earlier international festival screening.
Lionsgate has confirmed that the film will be released in UK cinemas on Friday 15 January 2027, giving audiences another opportunity to see the comedy following its festival appearance. The film runs for approximately 105 minutes and combines theatrical humour with a story about personal confidence and finding a sense of belonging.
For audiences interested in character-led comedies, The Debut offers a story about an ordinary woman discovering that an unexpected opportunity can change the way she sees herself.
