Stephen King’s Carrie returns with a terrifying modern update
Mike Flanagan's eight-part Carrie series arrives on Prime Video on 7 October 2026 with Summer H. Howell taking the title role.
Stephen King's Carrie is returning in a completely new form when all eight episodes of Mike Flanagan's television adaptation arrive on Prime Video on Wednesday 7 October 2026. Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, with Samantha Sloyan taking the role of her fiercely controlling mother Margaret.
It is the first time King's story has been adapted as a television series rather than another feature film. Flanagan serves as showrunner, writer and director, expanding the familiar story across eight episodes rather than fitting Carrie's journey into approximately two hours.
What changes in the new Carrie?
The central idea remains recognisable, with Carrie growing up isolated under her mother's control before being thrown into a brutal high-school environment. Her telekinetic abilities begin emerging at the same time as bullying and adolescence transform her life.
The 2026 version brings that bullying firmly into the social-media age. Carrie becomes caught in a viral scandal, allowing humiliation that once might have remained inside a school to spread much further and much faster.
That modernisation gives the adaptation a reason to revisit a story first published more than 50 years ago. Online cruelty, public shaming and the pressure of becoming unwilling content for other people can make Carrie's isolation feel very different from previous screen versions.

Who plays Carrie White?
Howell won the role after more than 1,000 performers were considered for Carrie. Sloyan joins her as Margaret, while the wider cast brings King's school community and family story into the longer television format.
The eight-episode structure should also allow more time with characters surrounding Carrie before the story reaches the catastrophic event the novel and earlier adaptations are famous for. Flanagan's version is being presented as a reinvention rather than a scene-for-scene remake.
All eight episodes arrive together on 7 October 2026, so Prime Video subscribers will be able to watch the complete series immediately rather than waiting for weekly releases.
