Snowfall Returns With New Disney+ Crime Drama The Drop
Snowfall returns with The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, the new Disney+ crime drama following Wanda and Leon through the rise of West Coast rap.
Snowfall fans finally have a reason to head back to 1990s Los Angeles as The Drop: A Snowfall Saga launches a new chapter in the acclaimed crime drama’s world.
The new eight-part FX series is streaming now on Disney+ in the UK, with Gail Bean returning as Wanda Bell alongside Isaiah John as Leon Simmons. Rather than trying to recreate Franklin Saint’s original story, The Drop moves forward into a different era as Los Angeles begins shifting from the fallout of the crack epidemic towards the explosive rise of West Coast rap.
That gives the spin-off a completely different energy while keeping it connected to the world Snowfall viewers already know.
Wanda believes music could become her route towards building something better and begins trying to assemble a group of emerging talent around Los Angeles. Her ambitions soon bring her into the complicated overlap between the rapidly growing music scene and the street politics surrounding it.
Leon has taken a very different direction. After everything he experienced during Snowfall, he is attempting to leave the streets behind and find some form of redemption through a free legal clinic. His relationship with Wanda remains important, but the different lives they are now trying to create inevitably begin pulling them in different directions.
The series also introduces Wanda’s cousins Lamar and James Kinsey alongside volatile local rapper Artillery, while former drug dealer Darryl “DG” Grant has reinvented himself as a record label owner.
The combination gives The Drop much more than a simple nostalgia connection to Snowfall. Music, money, ambition and survival are now colliding in a city where an entirely new cultural movement is beginning to take shape.
Early reviews have also started strongly. At the time of publication, The Drop holds a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes from its first five reviews. That number could naturally change as more reviews are added, but it gives the series an impressive start.
For existing Snowfall viewers, the return of Wanda and Leon provides the immediate connection. For anyone coming to the series fresh, the early 1990s Los Angeles setting and rise of West Coast rap gives The Drop enough of its own identity to work beyond the original show.
