Shortland Street’s Maeve Dumps BJ After Crane’s Brutal Verdict
Shortland Street’s Maeve dumps BJ after Sophia Crane gives a brutal verdict on their romance, as excited Craeve fans spot a possible reunion
Shortland Street fans hoping for a Maeve Mullens and Sophia Crane reunion have been given a major reason to believe the door could finally be reopening after Maeve ended her relationship with BJ.
The breakup came shortly after Maeve asked Crane exactly what she thought about BJ, prompting one of Sophia’s characteristically direct assessments. Now the sequence of events has sent Craeve fans into overdrive, with viewers questioning whether Maeve’s feelings for Crane are about to come back to the surface.

Crane initially appeared reluctant to get involved in Maeve’s relationship, asking why her opinion mattered. Maeve insisted that everyone else around Ferndale seemed happy to weigh in on her love life, so Crane could do the same.
That was all the invitation Sophia needed.
“She’s kind and generous, which I appreciate, but she’s uncouth, unprofessional, and moderately irritating,” Crane told Maeve.
She then delivered the line that may prove far more important: “In summary, I think she’s totally wrong for you, and I think you’re in it for the distraction, dopamine, and adrenaline.”
It was classic Sophia Crane. There was no attempt to disguise what she thought, something Sophia herself made abundantly clear when she reminded Maeve: “I don’t do subtext. You know that.”
And Maeve certainly appeared to take notice. Shortly afterwards, Maeve sat down with BJ and brought their relationship to an end. She explained that she did not want to date at the moment before admitting: “I just don’t think we’re compatible.”

Maeve also acknowledged that continuing the relationship would be unfair to BJ, saying: “It’s just not fair on you if I’m not 100% in.”
BJ eventually accepted what Maeve was telling her, responding: “You must set me free.”
The sequence is particularly interesting because Crane never actually tells Maeve to leave BJ. Maeve makes that decision herself and gives clear reasons for doing so. However, the fact she actively sought Sophia’s opinion before subsequently ending the relationship has inevitably caught viewers’ attention.
Could Crane simply have said aloud what Maeve was already beginning to realise?
That is certainly how some fans are interpreting it.
The reaction surrounding the scenes has been significant. One Craeve TikTok shown following the storyline had attracted more than 5,200 likes, over 800 saves and more than 200 comments, with viewers dissecting the interactions between Maeve, BJ and Crane.
One fan wrote: “Omg yes, I was so excited when I watched the part when Maeve breaks up with BJ. It was hilarious that she asked Crane what she thinks about BJ, said she doesn’t care and then broke up with BJ immediately after the convo with Crane.”
Another spotted the speed of Maeve’s apparent change of heart, writing: “That was fast after the ‘I’m not gonna stop seeing her for anyone’.”
Crane herself proved hugely popular during the scenes. “Crane just spoke my intrusive thoughts out loud,” one viewer commented, while another celebrated her refusal to hide what she thought: “Thank you Crane for no subtexts.”
Another simply wrote: “Ah brutal honesty. Gotta love Crane.”
But one fan observation may prove particularly interesting for viewers hoping that Maeve and Sophia still have unfinished business.
“The difference in Maeve’s spark in personality the minute Crane walked in said it all,” they wrote.
There is also some caution among fans. One viewer argued that Maeve should spend some time single before anything potentially happens with Sophia, writing that Maeve “needs to be alone for some time before she gets with Crane again as well”.
What the breakup does accomplish is remove one significant barrier between them. More importantly, Sophia has once again become directly involved in Maeve’s romantic story, while Maeve actively sought out the opinion of someone whose feelings and judgement clearly still matter to her.
For Craeve fans, that is enough to make what happens next worth watching very closely.
