Two major television stars are coming together in the West End this autumn, with Gillian Anderson and Billy Crudup leading a new production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Gillian Anderson is known around the world as FBI agent Dana Scully in The X Files, while more recent audiences will recognise her as sex therapist Jean Milburn in Netflix hit Sex Education and Margaret Thatcher in The Crown. She plays Martha in Edward Albee’s famously intense relationship drama.

Opposite her is Billy Crudup, who plays television executive Cory Ellison in Apple TV hit The Morning Show alongside Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Film audiences may also know him from Almost Famous, Spotlight, Watchmen and Alien Covenant, while his theatre career has earned major awards of its own.

Billy plays Martha’s husband George, with the entire play unfolding around their increasingly destructive relationship. After Martha invites a younger academic couple back to their home following a university gathering, an apparently ordinary night of drinks develops into a brutal series of arguments, revelations and psychological games.

The production opens at @sohoplace on 21 September and runs until 19 December. The theatre is designed for productions staged in the round, meaning audiences surround the performers rather than watching from one traditional direction.

Directing the production is Marianne Elliott, one of Britain’s most successful theatre directors. Her previous productions include War Horse, Company and Angels in America, and she has won both Tony and Olivier Awards for her work.

Phoebe Horn plays Honey and Josh Dylan plays Nick. Josh may be familiar to film audiences as the younger version of Bill Anderson in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, while he has more recently appeared in Apple TV drama The Buccaneers.
