Romance does not become any less complicated with age. Previous relationships, heartbreak and the experiences people carry into their thirties and forties can make falling in love both exciting and frightening, particularly when someone has spent years learning to protect themselves.

That is the starting point for Seabreeze, an original WLW romance series following two women whose unexpected attraction develops while they are both dealing with difficult experiences from their past. Created by Charley, the writer behind Between Her and Her, the series places emotional connection at the centre of Emma and Lily's relationship, allowing their feelings to develop gradually rather than rushing them into romance.

Two women who have already lived full lives

Emma is 37, an English artist who moves to the coastal town of Seabreeze following the death of her twin sister, Jess, and the breakdown of her relationship. She hopes the move will offer a fresh start, although she is still struggling to understand what that means for her future.

Lily, 39, is a marine biologist with Icelandic roots. She is warm, confident and independent, but has also experienced heartbreak and carries emotional difficulties of her own. Their chance meeting on the beach creates an immediate attraction, although neither woman finds it particularly easy to acknowledge what is happening between them.

Speaking exclusively to SoapLandTV, Charley explained why she wanted to focus on women who already have established lives rather than characters experiencing their first relationship. "They're not looking for someone to complete them. They're trying to work out whether they're brave enough to let someone else become part of their lives."

That distinction is important to the story. Emma and Lily are independent women with careers and personal histories, and their developing relationship does not erase the experiences that have shaped them.

Why grief cannot simply disappear

Emma's grief is particularly important to the way Seabreeze approaches romance. Having lost her twin sister and experienced the end of a relationship, she is understandably cautious about becoming emotionally involved with someone new.

Charley has drawn on aspects of her own experiences when developing the character, including her interest in art and familiarity with personal loss. She explained that Emma's attraction to Lily cannot simply resolve everything she has experienced.

"Emma doesn't suddenly stop grieving because she's met an attractive woman on a beach. Lily doesn't forget her past just because there's chemistry between them." Rather than using romance as an instant solution to difficult emotions, the series allows both women to work through their feelings while gradually becoming closer.

That creates space for awkward conversations, uncertainty and moments when one character might be ready to move forward while the other still needs time. It also means that neither woman has to abandon her independence or personal identity to pursue the relationship.

The appeal of a slower romance

For Charley, much of the enjoyment of a romantic story comes from the anticipation before a relationship begins. She wanted viewers to understand Emma and Lily as individuals before becoming invested in them as a couple, believing that their eventual progress would feel more meaningful if the audience understood their hesitations.

The series concentrates on small gestures, including a brief touch between the women during their first meeting outside Emma's beach house. Charley considers that scene one of her favourites because it establishes their attraction without requiring either character to explain how she feels.

The approach also offers a portrayal of WLW relationships in which the characters' sexuality is not their only defining characteristic. Their careers, previous relationships, grief and personal ambitions all influence the way they approach intimacy.

A romance built around trust

As Seabreeze continues, Emma and Lily will have to navigate the difficulties of allowing someone new into their lives while confronting experiences that have left them cautious about relationships. Charley has planned further exploration of their pasts, with trust and emotional vulnerability remaining central to the developing story.

The attraction between them may be immediate, but building a relationship is something neither woman can rush. That is what gives Seabreeze its emotional appeal. Emma and Lily are not searching for someone to make their lives complete. They are discovering whether they can make room for love alongside everything they have already experienced.
