Roku Just Launched a TV Channel Full of AI Generated Shows

Roku viewers can now switch on a television channel dedicated entirely to AI generated entertainment, with films, series and shorts playing around the clock.

The channel is called Fairground AI Creator TV and has been added to Roku as a free, advertising supported FAST channel. It is being presented as a dedicated home for AI cinema, taking material that might previously have appeared as individual clips online and putting it into a traditional television style schedule.

AI entertainment is now getting its own TV channel

Fairground AI Creator TV runs 24 hours a day and carries a mixture of science fiction, drama, animation, true crime, documentaries and comedy. The channel is operated by Fairground Entertainment, the company founded by Colin Petrie Norris.

Rather than viewers choosing individual clips from a feed, Fairground is attempting to package AI created entertainment into something closer to conventional television. That means viewers can simply turn it on and watch whatever happens to be playing, with advertising supporting the service.

Roku also currently lists Best of AI, a two season collection showcasing AI generated films from around the world across animation, documentary and other genres. That gives AI filmmakers another route onto television screens rather than relying entirely on social media or specialist online communities.

The reaction has been very mixed

The launch has already attracted plenty of criticism, particularly around the quality of some of the programming. Reviews of the channel have described noticeable problems with movement, realism and consistency, while some viewers have dismissed the material as low quality AI content.

That reaction is important because Fairground is effectively testing whether audiences will actually sit down and watch AI generated entertainment in the same way they watch conventional television.

The channel is also trying to position itself as a platform for creators rather than simply an endless stream of automatically generated material. Fairground has said it wants to curate work from AI storytellers and provide creators with a place where their films and series can reach larger audiences.

Could this be an early glimpse of AI television?

Whether Fairground becomes a long term success is another question, but simply appearing on Roku gives AI filmmaking a very different level of visibility.

AI generated video has rapidly moved from short experiments into films, series and increasingly ambitious productions. A dedicated 24 hour television channel takes that progression another step further by asking viewers to treat AI content as an entertainment category in its own right.

For now, Fairground feels as much like an experiment as a fully formed television network. If audiences continue watching, however, other streaming platforms may eventually decide that AI generated programming deserves dedicated space too.
