Rob Jetten Announces €7.5m a Year for LGBTQ+ Safety

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten announced on Thursday, 6 August, that the Netherlands will invest €7.5 million a year to improve LGBTQ+ safety, as the country strengthens its commitment to equality during Amsterdam WorldPride.

The investment will be made annually over the next three years and will support measures aimed at improving safety for the queer community. A public information campaign will also be launched to tackle discrimination and disinformation, putting practical action behind the Netherlands’ continued support for LGBTQ+ people.

Jetten announced the plans while speaking at the WorldPride Human Rights Conference in Amsterdam, where he also warned that progress on LGBTQ+ equality cannot simply be taken for granted.

While much of his speech addressed the challenges still facing LGBTQ+ communities, the response from the Dutch government provides a positive message. Rather than allowing growing hostility to go unanswered, the Netherlands is committing further funding to safety, education and greater awareness.

Jetten highlighted online hatred as one of the biggest threats currently facing LGBTQ+ people, arguing that large social media companies are not doing enough to moderate hate speech.

He warned that misinformation and disinformation can spread extraordinarily quickly online, giving hostile groups an opportunity to reach large audiences. He also spoke about increasingly aggressive homophobic rhetoric and the need to protect progress on equal rights.

The message was not simply one of concern, however. Jetten pointed to the strength of LGBTQ+ communities and their supporters, including the thousands who recently gathered at Amsterdam’s Homomonument in remembrance following the deadly attack at Berlin Pride.

€7.5m annual investment in LGBTQ+ safety

The Dutch government’s response will include €7.5 million every year for the next three years to improve the safety of the queer community.

Part of the investment will support Purple Friday, an initiative which sees schools across the Netherlands give particular attention to diversity and LGBTQ+ inclusion. Pupils and teachers can wear purple to demonstrate their support, with thousands of primary and secondary schools taking part.

Purple Friday has faced resistance in some schools, including incidents involving rainbow flags and posters. Continued government investment therefore sends a clear message that LGBTQ+ inclusion and safety remain priorities.

The planned public information campaign will also focus on combating discrimination and disinformation, addressing some of the concerns Jetten raised about the rapid spread of hostile narratives online.

Netherlands marks 25 years of marriage equality

The announcement carries additional significance because it comes 25 years after the Netherlands made LGBTQ+ history.

On 1 April 2001, the Netherlands became the first country in the world to open marriage to same sex couples. Four couples married at Amsterdam City Hall shortly after midnight, marking a landmark moment that would eventually be followed by marriage equality in countries around the world.

Around 36,000 same sex couples have married in the Netherlands since then, according to figures cited by DutchNews.

A quarter of a century later, Amsterdam hosting WorldPride while its government commits millions of euros each year towards LGBTQ+ safety creates a powerful link between the country’s past achievements and its plans for the future.

Jetten made clear that the international picture is not universally positive and that hard won progress needs protecting. Yet the Netherlands’ response demonstrates what governments can do when those concerns are matched with investment and action.

Twenty five years after becoming the first country to introduce marriage equality, the Netherlands is once again putting LGBTQ+ rights firmly on the agenda. With €7.5 million being committed each year to safety alongside education and action against discrimination, the message from Amsterdam is ultimately one of determination, visibility and continued progress.
