Northanger Abbey coming to ITVX as ITV confirms September streaming date
Northanger Abbey is coming to ITVX after ITV acquired the 2007 Jane Austen adaptation starring Felicity Jones and JJ Feild, with streaming beginning in September.
ITV has acquired the 2007 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey, bringing the period drama to ITVX from 24 September. The film stars Felicity Jones as Catherine Morland and JJ Feild as Henry Tilney in the screen adaptation of Austen’s classic novel.
Northanger Abbey follows Catherine as she is introduced to society and travels to Bath, where she meets the Tilney family. She is subsequently invited to stay at their estate, Northanger Abbey, where her love of Gothic literature and naturally active imagination lead her to become increasingly fascinated by the mysteries surrounding her new surroundings.
The adaptation combines romance, period drama and Austen’s distinctive humour as Catherine attempts to navigate relationships and the expectations placed upon her. Her outlook is captured in one of the lines highlighted by ITV from Austen’s original novel:
“And to marry for money I think the wickedest thing in existence.”
As Catherine becomes more comfortable with the Tilneys, her curiosity turns towards the history of Northanger Abbey and a death connected to the family.
Her enthusiasm for Gothic stories begins to shape what she believes may have happened, creating one of the central tensions in Austen’s story between imagination and reality.
The ITVX acquisition gives audiences another opportunity to watch the adaptation almost 20 years after its original release. With Felicity and JJ leading the cast, the film brings one of Austen’s most playful stories back to UK streaming audiences.
