Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård Lead Netflix’s Brutal True Story The Mosquito Bowl

Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård are leading Netflix’s new war epic The Mosquito Bowl, but this is not simply another World War II film. It is based on the remarkable true story of young American football stars who walked away from promising sporting careers, joined the US Marines and found themselves heading towards some of the most brutal fighting of the Pacific war.

Galitzine plays John McLaughry, with Skarsgård as Bob Baumann. Ray Nicholson stars as Tony Butkovich and Tom Francis plays Dave Schreiner, completing the central group of four college football players whose lives changed after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The film is adapted from Buzz Bissinger’s nonfiction book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. Bissinger is the Pulitzer Prize winning writer behind Friday Night Lights, which makes the project particularly interesting because Peter Berg, who previously directed the Friday Night Lights film, is now bringing this story to Netflix.

What gives The Mosquito Bowl its unusual hook is the football game at the centre of the story. As the Marines prepared for the invasion of Okinawa, players from different units came together for a game featuring some of the best college football talent of their generation. For several of the men involved, it would be the final game they ever played.

That contrast between sporting success and the reality of war drives the film. These were young men with careers, recognition and futures waiting for them, but within a short period they were facing combat thousands of miles from home.

Peter Berg directs and produces, bringing experience from both sports drama and military stories. His previous work includes Friday Night Lights and Lone Survivor, while his recent Netflix projects have included American Primeval and Painkiller.

The production also appears to have gone big on scale. Filming took place in Australia, with locations across Queensland and northern New South Wales standing in for Marine training grounds and parts of the Pacific theatre. Berg has said the aim was to create a reality based film that respected the men whose lives inspired it.

The first teaser gives viewers an early look at both sides of the story, moving between football fields, military training and increasingly dangerous combat. It also gives Galitzine and Skarsgård very different roles from some of the projects audiences may know them for.

For Galitzine in particular, the film represents another major shift after romantic and dramatic roles including The Idea of You. Skarsgård arrives following high profile performances including Nosferatu, while Nicholson and Francis add two more rising names to a cast built around the real men at the centre of the story.

The Mosquito Bowl will receive a limited cinema release from 30 October 2026 before arriving on Netflix worldwide on 25 November.

For audiences who like true stories, sports dramas or large scale war films, this could be one of Netflix’s more interesting releases of the autumn. The idea of elite young athletes playing one final game before facing the realities of Okinawa gives The Mosquito Bowl an emotional hook that goes far beyond a conventional battlefield story.
