Former England football star Michael Owen is opening the doors to his family life and horse-racing business in a new six-part reality series, Meet the Owens.

Launching on Prime Video on Friday 28 August, the series follows Michael as he works to develop Manor House Stables in Cheshire into one of the leading facilities in the horse-racing industry.

Cameras followed Michael for more than a year, capturing both the business and the family behind it. His wife Louise features alongside their children Gemma, James, Emily and Jessica, with Gemma already well known to viewers following her appearance on Love Island.

Michael, who scored 40 goals for England during his international career and also played for clubs including Liverpool and Real Madrid, retired from professional football in 2013. His attention has since increasingly turned towards racing and the future of Manor House Stables.

“My life has changed from football to the horse-racing game. I want to develop the business, and I thought this would be a lovely way of telling that story,” Michael explains.

However, what began as a programme about the business soon became much more focused on the Owens themselves.

“Once we were filming the series, I enjoyed having the crew in our house, seeing what we do day-to-day, so it became more of a family thing!”

Meet the Owens will also give Michael an opportunity to show viewers another side of his personality following years in the public eye as one of England’s most recognisable footballers.

Reflecting on the huge attention he received as a young player, including England’s 1998 World Cup campaign, Michael says the public perception of him has not always matched the person his friends and family know.

“My football mates all laugh about it, because it’s so different to what I’m really like! Now, viewers can make up their own minds.”

Meet the Owens consists of six episodes and will be available on Prime Video from Friday 28 August.
