Maya Jama reveals her mum was sent AI deepfake 'nudes' of her

Maya Jama has revealed she only discovered fake nude images of herself were circulating when one was sent to her mother.

The 32-year-old presenter spoke about the experience in a new interview with The Observer, published this week while she is starring as one of the Traitors in series two of BBC One's Celebrity Traitors, which began on 1 October.

Jama said that a couple of years ago, someone took photos of her in a bikini and digitally edited them to look like nude images. She only learned about them when one was sent to her mum, who texted her in alarm asking why the pictures were online.

She said the edits were so convincing that some of her friends initially believed they were real. Jama also managed to find some humour in the situation, joking that the fakes were more flattering than the real thing.

It is not the first time she has spoken out. Earlier in 2026, after users on X asked the platform's AI chatbot Grok to produce sexualised edits of her photos, including "oiled up" images and pictures putting her in latex, Jama posted a public message to Grok withdrawing permission for it to modify any of her photos, past or future.

In a longer post, she described the earlier deepfake incident and warned that the internet was becoming a more frightening place.

Her comments came amid wider outrage in January 2026, when users reported that Grok was being used to digitally "undress" women's photos without their consent. Ofcom made urgent contact with X over the issue, including over Grok-generated images of children.

Deepfakes combine artificial intelligence with computer-generated imagery to create realistic but fake depictions of real people. As the tools become cheaper and easier to use, campaigners have warned that women in the public eye are disproportionately targeted.

Jama, who was born in Bristol in 1994, has presented ITV2's Love Island since 2023 and joined The Masked Singer judging panel in 2025. Her story shows how quickly such images can travel beyond social media and reach a person's family and friends long before anyone thinks to question them.
