Luke Evans stars in ITV thriller The Party, exploring sex, betrayal, class and secret love. Watch the explosive first trailer ahead of its October launch.
ITV has released the first explosive trailer for The Party, its new five-part psychological thriller starring Luke Evans and Tom Cullen, ahead of the drama’s arrival this October.
Adapted from Elizabeth Day’s bestselling novel, the series explores privilege, class, obsession and secrets stretching back decades. Luke plays Martin Gilmour, whose carefully constructed life begins to unravel as the past threatens to expose relationships and truths he has spent years keeping hidden.
Teasing what viewers can expect, Luke said:
“Yes, I’m back on ITV in October with my new drama, The Party. It’s full of sex, betrayal, secrets, closeted love and some very, very bad behaviour, so naturally I felt right at home!”
Central to the story is Martin’s complicated relationship with Ben, played by Tom Cullen, which has developed across decades.
Luke said: “Yeah, Tom is straight and I’m gay, but there was no discomfort that [our characters] could fall in love, because that story is really the thing that should break everyone’s hearts. We both knew that we wanted this to feel beautiful and passionate and tragic and real.”
He has also spoken about personally connecting with Martin’s feelings of being an outsider, drawing comparisons with his own experience of growing up in a small Welsh village before moving to London aged seventeen.
“There were moments for sure where I was emotionally connected on a very deep level with Martin,” Luke said. “I felt the pain and I felt the confusion and the complexity of the life he’d created in this very fragile house of cards.”

Elizabeth Day described seeing her first novel adapted for television as the culmination of an almost decade-long journey, revealing that watching Luke and Tom bring characters that previously existed only in her imagination to life gave her “absolute shivers.”
She will even make a brief appearance herself, with eagle-eyed viewers able to spot the author during the opening montage of episode one.
The Party will air on ITV1 and STV and stream on ITVX and STV Player this October, bringing together sexuality, class, social ambition, love, betrayal and corruption in a story built around what happens when a carefully protected past can no longer stay buried.
