Ludwig series 3- Christmas special and record ratings: everything confirmed
Ludwig series two was the most-watched scripted launch of 2026, series three is filming and Sir David Suchet guest stars in a Christmas special. Here is everything confirmed so far.
David Mitchell's puzzle-loving detective has had a remarkable few months.
The second series of Ludwig has become the most-watched scripted launch of 2026, a festive episode featuring Sir David Suchet is on its way, and filming has already begun on a third series.
Here is everything the BBC and the show's producers have confirmed so far, along with what is still to be announced.
A record-breaking return for series two

Ludwig returned to BBC One on Thursday 20 August with six new episodes, and the run came to an end on 24 September. According to the BBC, the opening episode reached 9.1 million viewers over its first 28 days, which makes it the biggest scripted launch of the year so far across broadcasters and streamers alike. Some 5.5 million of those viewers watched on BBC iPlayer, the second-largest iPlayer audience this year for the first episode of a BBC comedy.

Mitchell was back as John "Ludwig" Taylor, the reclusive puzzle compiler who began posing as his missing twin brother, DCI James Taylor, in the first series. Anna Maxwell Martin returned as James's wife Lucy, while Mark Bonnar, Sian Clifford, Ben Ashenden and Rumi Sutton joined the cast for the new episodes. Filming on the second series had begun in September 2025, with a Christmas special and a third series following close behind.

Series three was ordered before series two aired
The BBC showed its confidence in the show early, commissioning a third series before the second had even reached screens. Production company Big Talk Studios has since confirmed that series three is in production, and the latest reports say filming is well under way. So far, though, nothing has been revealed about the new mysteries, and the BBC has yet to give any indication of when the episodes will be shown.

Sir David Suchet checks in for Christmas
The festive special was announced on 2 September, and it promises a very different setting for the family. In the hour-long episode, John, Lucy and her son Henry arrive at a remote Christmas-themed hotel in Yorkshire, hoping for a much-needed escape. When a sudden blackout plunges the celebrations into darkness, the break turns into a locked-room murder mystery, and a blizzard then leaves the guests stranded overnight with a killer somewhere among them.

Suchet, who is best known for playing Hercule Poirot, joins the cast as one of the murder suspects. "It made quite the refreshing change to be playing a suspect rather than the detective," he said when the episode was announced. Jason Flemyng, Joe Wilkinson, Cathy Tyson, Alexandra Roach, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Rebekah Staton, Claire Price, Ariella Glaser and George Rainsford are among the other guest stars, and the episode was written by series creator Mark Brotherhood and directed by Chris Foggin.
Watching Ludwig outside the UK
The show's international audience is about to catch up as well. Viewers in North America can watch the second series on BritBox from 13 October, with a new episode released each week until the finale on 17 November.
