Vicky Krieps stars in Love Me Tender, a new LGBTQ+ drama about motherhood, freedom and a woman rebuilding her life after coming out.
A new LGBTQ+ drama starring Vicky Krieps is now showing in UK cinemas, bringing a complex story about sexuality, motherhood and personal freedom to the big screen.
Love Me Tender was released in UK and Irish cinemas on 7 August 2026 through LGBTQ+ film distributor Peccadillo Pictures. Directed by Anna Cazenave Cambet, the French language film is adapted from the autofiction novel by writer Constance Debré.
What is Love Me Tender about?
Vicky plays Clémence, a former lawyer who has left both her career and marriage behind and is beginning a new chapter as a writer.
Initially, Clémence and her former husband Laurent, played by Antoine Reinartz, share care of their son Paul. Their relationship changes dramatically after Clémence tells Laurent that she is now dating women.
A difficult custody dispute follows, leaving Clémence fighting to maintain her relationship with her son while refusing to give up the new life she has created for herself.
The cast also includes Monia Chokri, Viggo Ferreira Redier and Féodor Atkine.
LGBTQ+ representation at the heart of the film
Clémence’s sexuality is central to Love Me Tender, but the film also explores her identity as a mother, writer and woman determined to live on her own terms.
Her new life includes relationships with women, friendships and experiences within Paris LGBTQ+ spaces, giving the film room to show queer life beyond the central family dispute.
The story is based on Constance’s 2020 novel of the same name, which drew from elements of her own life.
Vicky’s performance has received particularly strong attention from critics. Reviews have praised the way she portrays Clémence as a complicated woman navigating love, motherhood and the consequences of choosing a different path for herself.
The BFI previously selected the film for the 2025 BFI London Film Festival, describing it as a story about motherhood, desire and self discovery.
