Lilly Wachowski backs trans-led Witchy AF series
Lilly Wachowski executive produces Cassie Workman Is Witchy AF, a new trans-led occult comedy series coming to YouTube in September.
A new comedy series from Australian comedian Cassie Workman is heading to YouTube, with Cassie Workman Is Witchy AF combining occult history, magic, puppets and comedy across eight episodes.
Cassie created and hosts the series, which is set inside a fictional occult bookstore and explores everything from ritual magic and tarot to demons, death and some of the stranger figures and stories from occult history. New episodes will be released weekly after the series premieres on 16 September.
The project also has Lilly Wachowski behind it as an executive producer through Anarchists United Studios. Wachowski, who co-created The Matrix with Lana Wachowski, is supporting the series alongside ETCH, which produced and financed the project.
Rather than approaching the occult like a traditional documentary, Witchy AF uses comedy and practical effects throughout its stories. Cassie is joined by King Grimsquawk, a demonic raven puppet who acts as her co-host, while other puppets and supernatural characters appear as the series moves through its different subjects.
Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson is among the guest stars appearing during the series, alongside Australian comedian Ben Russell. The show will explore subjects including Aleister Crowley, John Dee, Santa Muerte and the hidden history of Hollywood, giving each episode a different part of the occult world to investigate.
There is also a strong LGBTQ+ presence behind the camera. The production was made with a largely women and LGBTQIA+ led cast and crew, with filmmaker Hannah Welever directing and Cassie leading the series both as its creator and presenter.
For viewers looking for something different from the usual streaming comedy, Witchy AF certainly has its own identity. An occult bookstore, a demonic raven, guest appearances and Cassie’s sense of humour make this one of the more distinctive LGBTQ+ led entertainment projects arriving this autumn.
Cassie Workman Is Witchy AF premieres exclusively on YouTube on 16 September, with new episodes released weekly.
