Kristen Stewart’s new film The Wrong Girls is directed by wife Dylan Meyer

Kristen Stewart has joined forces with her wife Dylan Meyer for new comedy The Wrong Girls, bringing their relationship behind the camera as well as onto one of the summer’s most unusual new films.

The Wrong Girls marks Meyer’s feature directorial debut, with Stewart starring alongside Alia Shawkat as Frankie and Molly, two best friends and roommates who are struggling to pay their rent while spending much of their time getting high and drifting through life in Los Angeles.

Things take a much stranger turn when a case of mistaken identity leaves the pair with an experimental drug. After taking it themselves, Frankie and Molly suddenly develop telepathic abilities and find themselves caught up with dangerous people who want the substance back.

Stewart takes on the role of Frankie, while Shawkat plays Molly, with the cast also featuring LaKeith Stanfield, Tony Hale, Kate McKinnon, Geena Davis, Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani. Rogen and Nanjiani even lend their voices to the pair’s cats as the film increasingly embraces its offbeat sci-fi comedy side.

For Stewart and Meyer, however, The Wrong Girls is also a particularly personal collaboration.

The couple first met years before becoming romantically involved, with Meyer revealing that she had already imagined Stewart being part of the film long before they eventually became a couple. Meyer had been developing the story for years and shared an early version with Stewart before their relationship began.

They later married in Los Angeles in April 2025, and The Wrong Girls now marks one of their biggest creative collaborations together.

Speaking while promoting the film, Stewart described making something with another person as her “favorite form of intimacy”, explaining that working creatively with the people closest to her feels completely natural.

Meyer has also spoken positively about directing her wife, revealing that Stewart had been in her mind for the role long before their personal relationship developed. The film gave Meyer the opportunity to show a much more openly comedic side of Stewart than audiences may be used to seeing from some of her more dramatic work.

The Wrong Girls also puts two women at the centre of a genre traditionally dominated by male friendships. Rather than presenting Frankie and Molly as characters who need to completely transform themselves, the comedy embraces their messy friendship, questionable decisions and determination to continue living life on their own terms.

The film opened in US cinemas on 14 August through NEON. A confirmed UK cinema release has not yet been announced, so British Kristen Stewart fans may have a little longer to wait before they can see her latest collaboration with Meyer.

With Meyer making her feature directing debut and Stewart clearly enjoying the opportunity to work alongside her wife, The Wrong Girls is another example of the pair turning their personal creative partnership into something audiences can now see on screen.
