Jon Hamm Leads American Hostage in Terrifying True Story of a 63-Hour Standoff

Jon Hamm and Giovanni Ribisi are heading into one of the strangest true crime stories of the 1970s as American Hostage turns a real 63-hour standoff into a new psychological thriller.

The eight-part MGM+ series premieres on 20 September and is inspired by the extraordinary events surrounding Indianapolis radio reporter Fred Heckman and hostage-taker Tony Kiritsis. Jon plays Fred, while Giovanni takes on the role of Tony in a story where a radio broadcast unexpectedly becomes part of a life-or-death hostage negotiation.

The real incident began in February 1977 when Tony abducted mortgage broker Dick Hall following a dispute connected to a property deal. Tony then contacted police and demanded that Fred, the respected news director at WIBC radio, allow him to explain his grievances live on air.

That demand put Fred in an extraordinary position. Instead of simply reporting on a developing crime, he found himself communicating directly with the hostage-taker while knowing that anything said during those broadcasts could influence whether Dick survived.

The standoff ultimately lasted 63 hours, with Fred increasingly caught between his responsibilities as a journalist and the reality that he had effectively become part of the negotiation. That collision between news, public spectacle and immediate danger is at the centre of the television adaptation.

Mireille plays Fred’s wife Barbara, while Kristoffer appears as Dick and William joins the cast as Ben. The series is co-created by Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers, with Jon also serving as an executive producer.

The story has previously been adapted as a scripted podcast, with Jon already voicing Fred in that version before moving into the television role. The podcast went on to win a Signal Award, while the new MGM+ adaptation expands the story across eight episodes.

What makes American Hostage particularly compelling is that the central situation sounds almost too extreme to be real. A local reporter suddenly becoming the person a desperate hostage-taker trusts enough to speak with live on air gives the series a very different hook from the usual true crime drama.

MGM+ has released the official American Hostage trailer, showing the escalating confrontation between Fred and Tony as the radio station becomes directly involved in the crisis. The first footage puts Jon and Giovanni’s performances at the centre of what looks like a tense, claustrophobic psychological battle.

Where to watch: American Hostage premieres on 20 September on MGM+, with UK availability currently listed through the MGM Plus Amazon Channel from the same date. The eight-part thriller begins with its opening episodes before continuing through the autumn.
