John Cena leads Matchbox into a huge new action movie
John Cena leads Matchbox The Movie when Mattel's new action adventure premieres globally on Apple TV on 9 October 2026.
Mattel's Matchbox cars are becoming a major action film when Matchbox The Movie premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday 9 October 2026. John Cena leads the cast as Sean, an undercover CIA agent whose unexpected return turns a reunion with his childhood friends into an international mission.
The film does not attempt to recreate one existing Matchbox storyline because the toys have never had a single continuing narrative. Instead, the famous miniature cars become the starting point for an original globe-trotting action comedy built around friendship, espionage and elaborate vehicle sequences.
What is Matchbox The Movie about?
Sean returns to the small town he left behind and reconnects with friends he has known since childhood. His secret life quickly catches up with him, dragging the group into an international pursuit in which they unexpectedly become part of an attempt to save the world.
Cena stars alongside Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris and Arturo Castro. The wider ensemble includes Danai Gurira, Corey Stoll, Bill Camp and Golshifteh Farahani, giving the film a considerably larger cast than its toy-box origins might initially suggest.
The finished film runs for approximately two hours and six minutes. That makes it a full-scale feature rather than a shorter family spin-off designed simply to advertise the Mattel brand.

Who is behind the film?
Sam Hargrave directs and executive produces after building a reputation around large-scale action filmmaking. David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay, with Skydance and Mattel Films among the companies producing the project.
Apple has already staged a special screening in Mexico City ahead of the worldwide streaming launch. The film itself becomes available to UK viewers through Apple TV on 9 October, with no separate cinema release required before subscribers can watch.
For Mattel, Matchbox The Movie also continues the push to turn familiar toy brands into broader entertainment properties. The test this time is whether a box of miniature cars can support characters and a story strong enough to work even when nobody is playing with the toys.
