ICEBREAKER Lets Ana and Noémie Stop Worrying About What Comes Next
ICEBREAKER brings Ana and Noémie closer as their return to the Polaris approaches, while Emily becomes suspicious after Sophie suddenly starts smiling.
In episodes 38-39 the storm has kept Ana and Noémie ashore longer than planned, but the delay is giving them something neither expected when they left the Polaris. Away from the ship, the mission and everyone watching them, the distance between them is finally disappearing.
Ana is still fighting herself every step of the way. Even when she admits that she wants Noémie, there is a hesitation underneath it, as though allowing herself to enjoy what is happening means accepting that she could eventually lose it.
Noémie refuses to let fear make that decision for her. She gives Ana room to choose, and when Ana finally tells her she wants to be with her, the careful restraint between them gives way to something far more open.
Their conversation afterwards says even more than the physical closeness. Ana admits that nobody has ever made her feel this way, while Noémie notices something just as unusual. Ana is smiling in a way she rarely does.
The moment cannot stay separate from reality forever. A call from the Polaris confirms that the weather may improve enough for a Zodiac boat to collect them early the following morning, bringing the end of their unexpected time ashore much closer.
Ana is already thinking about goodbye
By morning, Ana has started doing exactly what Noémie feared she would do. Instead of staying with what they have, she is already thinking about what happens once they return to the ship and what their relationship might look like after the mission.
Noémie recognises it immediately. She tells Ana that she does not need to work out where they will be six months from now or decide what happens when the mission ends.
She also admits that Ana is not alone in worrying about it. Noémie does not know what their relationship will become either, but she believes they can work that out together instead of trying to solve everything before it happens.
When Noémie asks Ana to stay, she is not talking about remaining in the room or avoiding the return to the Polaris. She simply wants Ana to stay with her in the present, and for once Ana agrees that she can.
Emily discovers Sophie has been smiling
Back aboard the Polaris, Emily has found a completely different problem. Sophie has been smiling, and according to Emily, that is unusual enough to require immediate investigation.
The smile apparently lasted around three seconds, which only makes Emily more suspicious. She decides Sophie must be stressed, tired or behaving strangely because Ana is stuck ashore and Sophie has been left responsible for the ship.
Everyone else appears to understand what Emily is refusing to acknowledge. Sophie has realized that Emily likes her, and Emily’s sudden concern about Sophie’s wellbeing is becoming increasingly difficult to disguise.
With Ana and Noémie facing an early return to the Polaris and Emily unknowingly walking straight into another romantic complication, ICEBREAKER is bringing both relationships into much clearer territory.
