Ian McKellen and Roger Allam explore later-life gay romance in Frank and Percy
Ian McKellen and Roger Allam lead Frank and Percy, a new film about two older men whose friendship develops into an unexpected gay romance.
Ian McKellen and Roger Allam are bringing a story of later-life gay romance to the screen in Frank and Percy, a film about two men whose chance meeting while walking their dogs develops into something far more intimate.
The adaptation of Martin Sherman’s West End play features McKellen and Allam as the titular characters, who meet on Hampstead Heath and gradually form a friendship. Their connection grows through ordinary encounters, with a platonic bond eventually opening the door to romance.
Directed by Sean Mathias, the 109-minute British production was selected for the 2026 BFI London Film Festival, where it features among the festival’s stories exploring love and human connection. The ensemble also includes Joanna Lumley, Stephen Fry, Derek Jacobi, Ncuti Gatwa and Siân Phillips.
Rather than centring on first love or the uncertainties of young adulthood, Frank and Percy follows two older men discovering that companionship can develop into a new relationship later in life.

A gay love story beyond middle age
Romantic films frequently focus on young couples, first relationships and the excitement of discovering love for the first time. Frank and Percy takes a different perspective, giving two older gay men the opportunity to lead a story about attraction, trust and the possibility of starting a new chapter.
The characters’ meeting while walking their dogs gives the film a deliberately everyday beginning. There is no grand romantic gesture or dramatic introduction; instead, their relationship develops from repeated encounters and the gradual recognition that they enjoy each other’s company.
That quieter approach makes room for the emotional complexities of finding love after decades of living. Both men arrive with their own histories and expectations, and the relationship asks them to consider what it means to let someone new into their lives.
From stage success to the big screen
Sherman’s play provides the foundation for the film, with Mathias directing an adaptation led by two highly regarded British actors. McKellen’s long career includes landmark stage and screen roles, while Allam is known for his extensive work across theatre, film and television.
The supporting cast adds further experience from British entertainment, bringing together performers whose careers span generations. Their presence places the central romance within a wider ensemble while keeping the evolving connection between Frank and Percy at the heart of the story.
The film’s central idea is simple but meaningful: finding love does not have an age limit. By focusing on two older men whose friendship develops into romance, Frank and Percy offers a story in which the possibility of connection remains open long after the first flush of youth.
