Home and Away Marilyn quits the Diner after Zane disappears

Marilyn reaches breaking point in Home and Away after Zane disappears from Summer Bay, leaving her convinced that she has failed the man she fought so hard to support. Her anger soon turns towards Leah, and the fallout ends with Marilyn making a dramatic decision about her future at the Diner.

The trouble begins when Justin reads out Zane’s goodbye letter and confirms that he has decided to leave. Marilyn is devastated and immediately sets off to try to find him, determined to change his mind before he gets too far.

Her search proves unsuccessful, and Justin has no luck either despite keeping an eye out for Zane. With no sign of him anywhere, the possibility that he may really have left the Bay begins to feel increasingly real.

Justin then raises another concern and wonders whether Zane could be breaching his parole by leaving town. The suggestion overwhelms Marilyn, who is already struggling with the guilt and fear surrounding his sudden disappearance.

Unable to cope with the conversation, Marilyn storms out of the Diner. Alf follows her and tries to offer some comfort as she admits that she feels as though she has let Zane down.

For Marilyn, the situation is especially painful because she had been one of the few people willing to stand firmly by Zane after learning the truth about his past. She believed he deserved a genuine second chance and repeatedly pushed others to stop judging him only by the crime he committed as a teenager.

She also fought hard to get him a trial shift at the Diner, convinced that work could help him begin building a more stable life in Summer Bay. Instead, Zane overheard Leah admitting that the trial had only been offered because Marilyn kept pushing for it, and he left believing that his presence was making Marilyn’s life harder.

When Marilyn returns to the Diner, Leah tries to help by offering her the day off. The gesture does nothing to calm the situation, and Marilyn instead lashes out at Leah.

She accuses Leah of getting exactly what she wanted now that Zane has gone. In Marilyn’s eyes, Leah never truly gave him the chance to prove himself and allowed her mistrust to shape the way he was treated from the moment he started working there.

The argument becomes too much for Marilyn, and she quits the Diner on the spot. It is a major reaction from someone who has been so closely connected to the business, but Marilyn is clearly acting from a place of hurt and frustration rather than simply anger.

Her decision also shows how personally she has taken Zane’s departure. Marilyn does not see this as a disagreement over one trial shift or one bad day at work, because she believes the wider atmosphere around Zane helped convince him that he would never really be accepted.

Leah may not have intended to drive Zane away, but Marilyn cannot separate her friend’s caution from the outcome. As far as she is concerned, Zane came to Summer Bay looking for another chance and left after realising just how little trust some people were prepared to give him.

By quitting, Marilyn makes it clear that the fallout is no longer only about Zane. Her friendship with Leah has now been badly damaged too, and the consequences of his departure are spreading well beyond the goodbye note he left behind.
