Home and Away Leah’s treatment of Zane backfires badly

Leah’s doubts about Zane backfire badly in Home and Away when his long-awaited trial at the Diner leaves him feeling more unwelcome than ever. Marilyn has fought hard to convince Leah to give him a chance, but the shift quickly becomes uncomfortable as Leah struggles to hide how little she trusts him.

Marilyn has already made it clear that she believes Zane deserves an opportunity to rebuild his life after serving his sentence. She repeatedly presses Leah to reconsider her earlier refusal to employ him, arguing that the Diner is often busy enough to justify giving him at least a trial.

Leah eventually gives in and agrees to let Zane prove himself. The decision should offer him a fresh start, but from the moment he begins working, Leah appears determined to keep a close eye on everything he does.

When Leah sees Zane serving a customer, she tells him to stick to clearing tables and stocking instead. The instruction immediately reinforces the sense that she is not yet comfortable allowing him much responsibility, even though he is there specifically to demonstrate whether he can handle the job.

Things go wrong when Zane accidentally gives a customer the wrong order and Leah quickly pulls him up over the mistake. A second incident soon follows when she notices Zane eating a duplicate order during his break and assumes he has made another error.

Leah tells Marilyn that Zane needs to own up when he gets things wrong, but Marilyn reveals that the duplicate order was actually her mistake. Leah is left having to confront the fact that she blamed Zane without checking what really happened first.

Feeling guilty, Leah changes her approach and offers Zane another trial shift. It appears to be an attempt to put the awkward beginning behind them, but the damage is not as easily undone as she believes.

Zane later overhears Leah speaking privately to Marilyn and learns that the only reason he was offered the trial in the first place was because Marilyn pushed so hard for it. He also hears Leah admit that she hopes she does not end up regretting the decision.

For Zane, those comments confirm that the opportunity was never really built on Leah believing in him. He realises Marilyn has placed herself in an increasingly difficult position simply by trying to help him, and that appears to weigh heavily on his decision about what to do next.

When the following trial shift arrives, Zane does not turn up. Instead, he leaves Marilyn a goodbye note explaining that he has decided to leave Summer Bay because he does not want to make her life any harder than it already is.

The outcome leaves Leah facing the consequences of a situation she never intended to create. Her caution around Zane may have come from genuine uncertainty about his past, but wrongly blaming him and allowing him to hear how reluctant she was to give him a chance ultimately helps push him away.

Marilyn is likely to see the situation very differently, because she has repeatedly argued that Zane cannot move forward if nobody is prepared to trust him. Leah may have believed she was simply being careful, but from Zane’s perspective, the trial only seems to confirm that he will always be judged before he has the chance to prove himself.

The episode leaves Leah with a difficult reality to confront. By the time she tries to make amends and offers Zane another shift, he has already heard enough to believe that staying in Summer Bay is causing more harm than good.
