Hollyoaks reveals Edinburgh Fringe inspiration behind Ste event
Hollyoaks producers have revealed how the Edinburgh Fringe inspired the ambitious Ste event that brought the soap into the streets of Chester.
Hollyoaks producers have revealed that a trip to the Edinburgh Fringe helped inspire the unusual real-world event which brought Ste’s disappearance storyline into the streets of Chester.
Executive producer Hannah Cheers and series producer Si Wall began developing the idea after visiting the famous arts festival. They started discussing how Hollyoaks could take a storyline beyond a traditional television episode and allow viewers to encounter the drama in the real world.

That eventually led to the Chester event, where fans followed clues before Ste appeared at Chester Cross after escaping from the van in which he had been held. What happened was not simply a promotional stunt, as footage captured during the event was later incorporated into the Hollyoaks storyline itself.
The production also extended the mystery across TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, allowing viewers to follow different parts of the story away from the usual Channel 4 episodes. Hollyoaks described the experiment as a soap first, combining its television drama with street theatre and social media storytelling.

Cheers explained that the team had explored what it might feel like for viewers to suddenly see a character from Hollyoaks appear in an ordinary real-world setting. The result meant fans were not simply watching Ste’s story unfold, but were briefly placed inside it before seeing the events reflected back on screen.

It marks one of Hollyoaks’ most unusual experiments with how a soap storyline can be told, while also showing how the programme is increasingly using social platforms alongside its television episodes.
