High Tides Creator Reveals What Clara and Valerie Would Post on Instagram
High Tides creator Fernanda reveals what Clara and Valerie’s Instagram feeds would look like, from ocean photographs to Valerie’s endless pictures of Clara.
Fans of High Tides already get to see Clara and Valerie outside the biggest moments of their story through the growing collection of images and videos surrounding them. But creator Fernanda has also imagined what would happen if the two women were actually running social media accounts of their own, and the difference between their feeds says plenty about both characters.
Clara’s account would reflect the parts of the world that matter to her. Training, the ocean, sunrises, coffee, Serefina, places she has visited, old photographs and other things she finds beautiful would all appear, but Clara herself would be much harder to find.

Fernanda believes somebody could follow Clara for months and still come away knowing surprisingly little about her private life. It fits a character who has often been independent and guarded, even while readers have gradually discovered much more about the fears, experiences and vulnerabilities beneath that exterior.
Valerie’s account would tell a rather different story. Her interests would still be clearly visible, with art, motorcycles, tattoos, sketches, music and the studio all forming part of her world, but one person would dominate the feed. Clara.
Fernanda imagines Valerie photographing her wife making coffee, reading, spending time at the beach, laughing when she does not realise a picture is being taken or simply relaxing with Serefina. Many of those moments would probably seem completely ordinary to Clara, which may be exactly why Valerie would want to keep them.

Even then, Fernanda does not imagine Valerie accompanying the photographs with lengthy romantic captions. There might be a single word, an inside joke or no explanation at all, continuing the quieter language that has always existed between the couple.
The contrast between their imagined accounts also captures something familiar about High Tides. Clara would reveal herself indirectly through the things she chooses to notice, while Valerie would make her feelings considerably harder to miss.
“And most of the time, it would be her wife.”
It is a playful glimpse at characters whose relationship is usually explored through much deeper experiences, but it also fits the way High Tides increasingly allows readers to spend time with Clara and Valerie between the major moments of their story.
