Hayley Kiyoko’s Girls Like Girls finally has a UK cinema release date, with the LGBTQ+ romance arriving in UK and Ireland cinemas on 2 Octobe
Hayley Kiyoko’s Girls Like Girls is finally heading to UK cinemas, giving British fans the chance to see the hugely anticipated LGBTQ+ coming of age romance on the big screen.
The film will arrive in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 2 October 2026. Focus Features has now confirmed the date on its official UK site, following the film’s earlier North American release in June.
For fans who have been waiting to find out whether the movie would make it across the Atlantic, it is particularly welcome news. Questions about a UK release had continued throughout the summer, with some viewers fearing the film might skip British cinemas altogether after becoming available digitally in the US.
Girls Like Girls marks Kiyoko’s feature film directorial debut and expands a story that has been part of her career for more than a decade. It began with her 2015 song and music video of the same name, before Kiyoko developed the idea further through her bestselling novel and eventually onto the big screen.
The romance follows 17 year old Coley as she struggles with grief following the death of her mother and finds herself developing feelings for Sonya during a summer in rural Oregon. Both girls are forced to navigate their uncertainties about themselves and each other as their connection develops.
The UK arrival comes as Kiyoko continues to celebrate what the project represents for lesbian audiences. Speaking ahead of the British release, she recently said she was “very proud to be a lesbian” and reflected on how powerful it would have been for her growing up to see two lead characters who represented her own experiences on screen.
More than 11 years after the original song helped establish Kiyoko as one of the most recognisable LGBTQ+ artists of her generation, Girls Like Girls has now grown into a full feature film with its own soundtrack and an international cinema rollout.
For UK and Irish fans who have watched that journey from the beginning, October will finally bring the story to the big screen.
