Harry Potter and Game of Thrones get new owner in huge Hollywood deal
Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Star Trek and Mission Impossible now sit under one company after a huge $110 billion Hollywood takeover.
Some of the biggest names in entertainment now belong under the same roof after Paramount completed its $110 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery.
The newly combined company is called Skydance, bringing Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, HBO, CBS and CNN together alongside two major streaming businesses and an extraordinary collection of film and television franchises.
Hollywood giants come together
The deal means Harry Potter, DC, Game of Thrones, Mission: Impossible, Star Trek and numerous other major properties now sit within the same entertainment group.
Skydance says the combined company intends to release at least 30 theatrical films every year, alongside more than 180 television shows and series. Its portfolio also includes CBS Sports and TNT Sports, giving the company a major presence across entertainment, news and live sport.
David Ellison remains chairman and chief executive, while former Mattel boss Ynon Kreiz becomes co-chief executive and will oversee much of the day-to-day operation and integration of the enormous new business.
For viewers, the most interesting question is what eventually happens to its streaming services, franchises and studios as that integration begins. No immediate overhaul of individual services or programmes has been announced simply because the takeover has completed.
The deal officially closed on 6 October, following regulatory approval, creating one of the world's biggest entertainment companies overnight.
