Hamilton star Joel Montague becomes The Grinch in huge Leeds Christmas musical
Hamilton star Joel Montague plays The Grinch as a brand new UK production of the Christmas musical arrives at Leeds Playhouse.
One of Christmas entertainment’s most famous characters is taking over Leeds this year, with Hamilton performer Joel Montague starring as The Grinch in a brand new UK production.
Joel Montague is an established West End musical theatre performer who has played King George III in Hamilton and appeared in major productions including Waitress, Elf The Musical, Falsettos, Funny Girl, School of Rock and Chicago. He now swaps those roles for green fur as the title character in Dr Seuss’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical.
The new production runs at Leeds Playhouse from 19 November until 16 January 2027, making it one of the city’s major theatre events across Christmas and New Year. It will play in the Playhouse’s large Quarry Theatre.
The story follows the residents of Who ville as they excitedly prepare for Christmas while The Grinch watches from above and decides he has had enough of their celebrations. His plan to steal Christmas sets up the familiar story that has been adapted repeatedly for film and television.
For many viewers, the character remains particularly associated with Jim Carrey’s performance in the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Joel has himself spoken about growing up as a fan of Dr Seuss and Jim’s portrayal, making his stage version an interesting prospect for audiences who know the character mainly from the cinema.
The musical features a book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin. Tom Wright, Artistic Director of Leeds Playhouse, directs this new UK production in association with Running Subway.
Its long run means families do not have to squeeze the production into a few performances before Christmas either. Shows continue beyond New Year and into the middle of January.

Dr Seuss’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical runs at Leeds Playhouse from 19 November until 16 January 2027. Performances take place in the Quarry Theatre, with a mixture of afternoon and evening dates available.
